The Vanishing Wall Between Church and State - Joel Richard Paul, Ronit Stahl & Binyamin Blum (Corte Madera Store)

Tuesday, December 3, 2019 - 7:00pm

Is America headed towards theocracy? Is political polarization threatening secular culture? Is America a Christian nation, or is it open to all? Can we accommodate an increasingly diverse society without imposing one faith on another?

Authors Joel Richard Paul and Ronit Stahl in conversation with Binyamin Blum will discuss the growing cracks in what Jefferson called, “a wall of separation" between the church and the state.

Professor Joel Richard Paul is a professor of constitutional law at U.C. Hastings Law School and the author most recently of Without Precedent: Chief Justice John Marshall and His Times and Unlikely Allies: How a Merchant, a Playwright, and a Spy Saved the American Revolution.

Ronit Y. Stahl is a historian of religion, law, and politics in modern America. She is the author of the award-winning book, Enlisting Faith: How the Military Chaplaincy Shaped Religion and State in Modern America, and numerous articles in venues ranging from the New York Times and Washington Post to scholarly journals. She is an assistant professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley.
