When her mother developed Alzheimer’s in her early 60s, Suzanne Maggio longed to find a way to hold onto her. But her new memoir, The Cardinal Club: A Daughter’s Journey to Acceptance, traveled in unexpected directions as she began to write about her experience. Her book not only chronicles the personal journey to understand the tragedy unfolding through the illness, but also to unravel an often difficult relationship with her mother. The result
beckons readers to open their hearts to “unfinished business” in their own relationships.

Throughout her 30-year career as a licensed clinical social worker, Suzanne Maggio has helped hundreds of families improve their relationships by encouraging them to share and connect their stories. She now trains a new generation of helpers as a university lecturer in Psychology, Counseling and Social Work at Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College.

Passionate about writing, Ms. Maggio won a 2016 silver award from publisher Travelers Tales for “Yo Soy,” a story about the search for identity while traveling in Nicaragua. Her work also has been published in Sonoma Family Life, an award-winning parenting magazine, and Junior Baseball Magazine. She lives in Northern California with her husband, where they raised their two sons and where they now manage three rambunctious dogs and a brood of demanding chickens.
