Susan Hall - Out of the Fire (Corte Madera Store)

Saturday, June 1, 2019 - 4:00pm

Susan Hall has exhibited her work in the United States and abroad for the last fifty years. She has had solo shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her artistic vision and experience are represented in three books: Painting Point Reyes (2002) captures, in the tradition of Chinese landscape painting, the land, sea and sky of remembered experience; Home Before Dark (2005) celebrates the daylight and moonlight as they affect the sensuous richness in nature; and River Flowing Home (2010), a creative biography, is the story of her life as an artist. Her newest book, Out of the Fire: The Ceramic Art of Susan Hall features Hall in conversation with Douglas Cruickshank, and is an exploration of Hall's adventures with ceramics.

Hall's ceramics feature dozens of subjects, from mice to sheep to persimmons to dogs. Her plates featuring mice and their love of cheese have been sold through Tomales Bay Foods/ Cowgirl Creamery for over 20 years. This book captures Susan's relationship to and lifelong love of West Marin, and the special attributes it has. She states, "It [my art] is an homage in the sense that I experienced a rich human community embedded in a soulful landscape [in West Marin]. The ceramics are an expression of devotion and loyalty to that environment. Landscape and community intertwine with my own life's journey, a theme I repeat often in my artwork. When you look at all my work, there are significant recurring themes about journeys."
