Small Business Saturday

Saturday, November 29, 2014 - 9:00am to 3:00pm

Forget all the Black Friday and Cyber Monday hoopla; the real fun this Thanksgiving weekend is at independent bookstores on Small Business Saturday

Last year, famed author Sherman Alexie issued an “Indies First” challenge to his fellow writers, urging them to spend an “amazing day” at their local bookstore:

We book nerds will become booksellers. We will make recommendations. We will practice nepotism and urge readers to buy multiple copies of our friends’ books.

A great many authors took up the challenge, and now it has become an annual tradition.

Come by our Ferry Building store and schmooze with well-known authors who will be helping out. They may be behind the counter, but they will more likely be out on the floor chatting about books with customers.

We will be joined by some of the authors and illustrators from Cameron & Company publishing. Here are some of the “Booksellers-for-a-shift” that you can expect to meet at the Ferry Building:

9:00am Sara Deseran
Author of Tacolicious and co-owner of the famed SF restaurant.

10:00am Amy Novesky & Arlo Crawford
Amy is the author of Me, Frida; Mister & Lady Day; and Georgia in Hawaii. Arlo is the author of the intimate memoir A Farm Dies Once a Year.

11:00am Tom Barbash & Amy Gutierrez (Amy G)
Tom is a famed short story writer whose latest collection is Stay Up With Me. Amy G is the sideline and San Francisco Giants reporter for Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and the author of Smarty Marty's Got Game.

1:00pm Author Event: Evan Morgan Williams - Thorn

1:00pm Mati McDonough
Illustrator of I Carry Your Heart With Me.

1:30pm Mac Barnett & Jory John
Mac's outrageously funny kids’ books include Telephone, the Brixton Brothers series, and the forthcoming The Terrible Two, with Jory John (who will join his fellow prankster).

2:00pm Lewis Buzbee
Author of The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop. Buzbee’s latest book is Blackboard: A Personal History of the Classroom.
