A conversation featuring Southern Marin authors and activists in discussion with their community. Examining the relationship between personal experience and our culture's definition of expertise and authority, as it relates to being a woman in today's society.

Rachel Lehmann-Haupt is an expert on the future of family life, career timing, and the influence of science and technology on fertility, pregnancy and family. As the author of In Her Own Sweet Time: Egg Freezing and the New Frontiers of Family, she has influenced and been an inspiration to thousands of women who are searching for the best ways to balance their desires for a career and family. Her articles on the topic have been featured  from Slate to Babble.com. She has been profiled by The Chicago Tribune for her practical and brave choice to freeze her eggs when she was thirty-seven; she has appeared on Good Morning America, Wall Street Journal’s Lunch Break and Bay Area Focus speaking on the topic, and has been quoted on the front page of The New York Times.  In her writing and speaking, she gives a personal face and offers life strategies to the most relevant social trends that intimately affect women’s lives. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York, O magazine, Self, Outside, Wired, Vogue, Neo.life  and her essay “The Multi-tasking Man,” appeared in What Makes A Man: 21 Writers Imagine the Future, edited by Rebecca Walker.

Thais Nye Derich’s new memoir—Second Chance: A Mother’s Quest for a Natural Birth after a Cesarean—tells a powerful story about her traumatic hospital delivery and her decision, post-cesarean, to give birth naturally. Derich has been interviewed on NPR, KPFA, KRCB radio stations and various podcasts including Informed Pregnancy with Dr. Berlin. Her past work has been published in Salon, Literary Mama, BabyCenter, SFGate.com, among others. A chapter of Second Chance was a finalist for the Creative Non-Fiction Magazine’s Baby Anthology. Derich speaks to groups big and small about her story and the intersection between childbirth and social justice.

Monica Miller is an entrepreneur, activist, wife and mother. She is the founder of Bare Bones PR, co-producer of the documentary film on childbirth “Of Woman Born,” and a team member at The Hivery in Mill Valley. Her PR career has focused on bringing media attention to technology and business innovation, working with more than 30 high tech companies ranging in size from tiny startups to multi-national public companies. Before settling in the Bay Area, Monica attended Emory University and City College of NY.
