Left Coast Writers®: Cristina Olsen - Kissing the Sky

Kissing the Sky is an autobiography of the soul in poetic and visual form that begins with loss and loneliness, but soon transforms into love and an expansive freedom of the soul. From post-war London to the vast Pampas of Argentina, from Buenos Aires to the Hills of Novato, California, I weave a meditative tapestry of poetry, poetic prose, and photography celebrating the beauty of nature and its power to transform pain into joy. The book is divided into three parts, from finding light in the darkest hours, discovering love in all its guises, and reaching for the sky in blissful surrender. The accompanying photographs are not merely decorative. The way I take a photograph is the way I write a poem, circling the subject over and over again until the image says “take me!” I use the camera on my nature rambles to capture beauty, stalking prey like a hunter, every angle a joy to behold. And so every poem in this book evolves from a deep meditation with the image, and every image becomes a resonant backdrop that sends the poem flying—sometimes flying into unknown territory.

Cristina Olsen, PhD, CPCC, is an author, poet and photographer. She was born and raised in Argentina, then moved to the United States with her parents when she was 14. After graduating from high school, Cristina lived a nomadic life for more than 20 years, shifting residences between the United States and South America, and vagabonding through countries around the world. During those years, Cristina studied and earned degrees in cultural anthropology, psychology, philosophy and world religions. She eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and fellow poet and photographer, Dave Muñoz (Haikudave), and received her doctoral degree in Spirituality and Geography. Her dissertation, Nature in the Lives of Saints Brigit, Patrick, and Columba, was published by Lambert Academic Press and is available here on Amazon. Cristina has taught courses in world religions, spirituality, and meditative practices at various institutions throughout the Bay Area, and has lectured on Celtic Spirituality and nature mysticism in the United States and the U.K. In addition, she was an English-Spanish translator and language teacher for many years and a fundraiser for environmental organizations and for ecological agricultural programs in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. She now dedicates herself to creative writing and photography, and as a licensed Life Coach helps others in their creative pursuits and publishing endeavors.
