No Back Doors for Me is the story of the Joyce Johnson's life in corporate America as an African American woman—often the first and only woman or person of color in the room. The book title was formed from a story her mother once shared about a Mexican food restaurant in Galveston that she loved, but would only serve Blacks through the back door. After she gave birth to her daughter, Johnson’s mother had enough and decided not to go there anymore. “I took that story very literally as a young girl,” says Johnson, “I decided there will be “No Back Doors for Me!”

Learning to navigate a world that has fallen short of creating diverse and inclusive workplaces has made Johnson an experienced voice for Black women and professionals: “You will cry, you will laugh, and you will evaluate your thoughts and actions with a new lens after reading ‘No Back Doors For Me’!” says Johnson.

By relaying her story, Johnson wants to free African American women from feeling the sense of failure or pain that evolves from the constant impact of -ism’s throughout their careers. The story begins at the end of her corporate sales career in 2019 and spans back to her teenage years spent breaking color barriers.
