John Weiser - A Thousand Kisses (Corte Madera Store)

Thursday, April 4, 2019 - 7:00pm

An intimate and harrowing story of love, escape, and redemption, A Thousand Kisses is a rich account of the Weiser family's life and flight from Nazi Vienna to Hungary to Brazil and to the U.S. It will keep the reader glued to a narrative that skillfully recreates the palpable tension of multiple escapes. A Thousand Kisses is at once instructive about a family’s courage and determination to stay together and about the dangers of remaining silent while a government tightens immigration laws and promotes racial scapegoating.

John Weiser was born in Vienna Austria. After the Nazis arrived in Austria, John fled with his family first to Hungary and then to Brazil where they lived for several years before they were able to obtain permission to enter the United States. After he graduated from college, John served in the U.S. Navy for three years pursuant to the requirements of his NROTC scholarship. He then went to Harvard Law school. Upon graduation, he joined the law firm of Sherman and Sterling in New York City where he became partner and practiced for 20 years. In 1980 he resigned from the firm and took the position of General Counsel at Bechtel Group Inc., a major international engineering and construction firm. On retirement John became active in interfaith activities, first as chair of the board of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and more recently as chairman of the President's Council of United Religions Initiative.
