Jackie Speier & Jan Yanehiro - This Is Not the Life I Ordered (Corte Madera Store)

Sunday, April 28, 2019 - 1:00pm

This Is Not the Life I Ordered is the culmination of weekly “kitchen table coaching” sessions that took place for more than a decade and were designed to support four extraordinary women through life’s ups and downs. These women realized that their support of one another could help other women struggling with life’s myriad issues of work, family, and love, as well as the big questions of life and death. The power and strength of their collective friendship has enabled them to not only survive but to thrive, and the remarkable results are in this collection of lessons and stories and wisdom, which can help women turn any unfortunate event into a joy-filled opportunity.

Twenty-five percent of the material in this edition is completely new: two of the stories have been updated, many new interviews have been included, and there are two new chapters—one about the Me Too Movement and one focusing on the experience of loss for adult children.

Jackie Speier is the US Representative for California’s Fourteenth Congressional District. She is a recognized champion of women’s rights, privacy, and consumer safety—as well as an avowed opponent of government inefficiency and waste. In 2012, she was named to Newsweek’s list of 150 “Fearless Women” in the world. Jackie received a BA in political science from the University of California at Davis, and a JD from UC Hastings College of the Law. Along with her husband, Barry Dennis, her children, Jackson and Stephanie, and Buddy, their yellow lab, she is a proud fan of the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors.

Jan Yanehiro was of the original co-hosts of the ground-breaking magazine series Evening Magazine which aired on San Francisco's KPIX from 1976 to 1991. She has received several Emmys for her work, received the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award from the United Nations of San Francisco, and was inducted into the Academy of Television and Radio Hall of Fame in New York City. She has been the Director of Multimedia Communications at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco since 2008.
