Kentfield resident Claude Jarman Jr. has written his memoir, entitled My Life and the Final Days of Hollywood, about his career as an actor at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) during the “Golden Years” of Hollywood in the 1950s.

Discovered in a fifth grade school room in Nashville, Tennessee during a nationwide talent search, Jarman was selected out of 10,000 boys to star with Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman in the classic film, The Yearling. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the story focuses on a young boy’s relationship with his pet deer. Jarman received a special Academy Award for his performance as “Jody”. He went on to act in ten additional films including John Ford’s epic western, Rio Grande, where he played the son of John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. He capped his acting career with a starring role in Intruder in the Dust, based on William Faulkner’s 1949 controversial book about a lynching. Jarman writes about his years at the MGM school with classmates Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Powell, Roddy McDowell and Margaret O’Brien. He discusses how the advent of television led to the eventual collapse of the Hollywood studio system.

He moved to San Francisco in the sixties and in 1965 became the Executive Director of the San Francisco International Film Festival, a position he held until 1980.  During that period the Festival rose to become one of the premier film events in the world, and reunited Jarman with many famous stars he knew from Hollywood.  Jarman writes about the film festival and the luminaries who attended. His last film work was as Executive Producer of Fillmore, a documentary focused on rock impresario, Bill Graham, as he planned the closing rock concert at the music venue, the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Jarman has lived in Marin County, California for twenty two years with his wife Katie and their twin daughters Charlotte and Sarah.

In the 1940s, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was at the epicenter of the film world. Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor were only a few of the many stars under contract at the studio. The author, Claude Jarman Jr., takes us from his discovery in a small school in Nashville, Tennessee, through his life among the movie elite.
