Class: Joel Paul - The Right to Speak: A Closer Look at the First Amendment (Corte Madera)

Thursday, January 10, 2019 - 6:30pm

4 Thursdays; Jan. 10 - 31 • 6:30-8:30pm • $230

Probably no part of the Constitution has engendered more debate, controversy and passion as the right to “Freedom of Speech” under the First Amendment. Joel Richard Paul, is a Professor
of Constitutional Law at UC Hastings, and he is the right person to guide the class through this critical area of the law. Some may remember Professor Paul as one of the teachers in our class on the U.S. Constitution last fall. He is also the author of two provocative works of history: "Unlikely Allies and Without Precedent: Chief Justice John Marshall and His Times". The class will examine some of the key Supreme Court cases on the First Amendment and look at the issues that led up to those cases as well as the consequences of those decisions going forward.

The issues are complex and always controversisal, so participants may find themselves debating the issues just as passionately as those who argued them before the Supreme Court!
