Aristotle believed that plot was the most important and difficult challenge the writer faced. But by plot he meant the architecture of change in the hero’s fortunes. Character and structure are inextricably linked, and it is through structure that most of a story’s meaning is imparted. In this two-day class and workshop, David Corbett will demonstrate how the architecture of story, when properly understood, deepens our understanding of character, and how integrating character with story helps the writer avoid both formulaic plotting and episodic meandering. Special attention will be paid to individual student projects, with the goal of fashioning a strong narrative arc for each student’s work-in-progress.
