Carole Bumpus - Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table (Corte Madera Store)

Sunday, September 15, 2019 - 1:00pm

In this engaging travelogue and heartwarming culinary memoir, replete with delicious recipes, award-winning author Carole Bumpus shares her adventures traveling in France, where she met three generations of French families in their homes to share meals and to discover their culinary traditions. From Paris in the Île-de-France, through the Champagne, Alsatian and Lorraine Regions, Carole searched for the traditional “cuisine pauvre” (peasant foods) common to the French table. Learn along with her how to make homemade Spinach-stuffed Tortellini with Bolognaise Sauce from the Champagne region (and learn why the host chose an Italian recipe!), Crêpes and Watercress-stuffed Ravioli from the Lorraine, and Baekeofe and Kugelhopf from the Alsace. “Go blind” from the family stock of Eau de Vie liqueur and be treated to tales of foraging for snails for the infamous and now, sadly, extinct Escargots Festival.

As she traveled, sitting across the table in more than seventy interviews and intimate conversations, Carole listened as French families described their personal histories, the family recipes used for festivals and celebrations, and the ways in which sobering economic and political realities, especially WWII, shaped country, people, and cuisine. Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table, Book One is the first half of Carole’s culinary adventure in France. Her second book, Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table, Book Two will be the completion of this adventure, beginning in Paris, and heading north into Pas-de-Calais, Normandy, Brittany, Loire and completing the tour in the Auvergne. The third book moves into Italy and is called, Searching for Family and Traditions at the Italian Table, Book One. Books Two and Three are forthcoming from She Writes Press.

A retired family therapist, Carole Bumpus began writing about food and travel when she stumbled upon the amazing stories of women and war in France. She has traveled extensively throughout France and Italy, where she has interviewed more than seventy-five families to date for her food and travel blogs. Her historical novel A Cup of Redemption was published October 2014, and her unique companion cookbook, Recipes for Redemption: A Companion Cookbook to A Cup of Redemption, was released August 2015, both by She Writes Press. She is an active member in the California Writers Club and through them has also had three short stories published in the Fault Zone anthologies: Words from the Edge, Stepping up to the Edge, and Over the Edge. Bumpus lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
