Inside the Seed won the 2015 Jessie Richardson Award for Outstanding Original Script.

A major feature of the story is the treatment of American financial scandals, such as the Enron scandal and the subprime mortgage crisis. Though the play does not deal with these scandals specifically, it takes a great degree of inspiration from the human fallacy and duplicity evidenced and exposed by them.

This is the play’s most pronounced ideological dimension: the way in which not just corporate systems, but any institutionalized system, can exert a corrosive, corruptive influence upon even the most magnanimous and well-intentioned individual.

In a shocking turn of events, key elements of the production, three years in the making, now identically mirror controversial current events. Media outlets have recently announced that genetically modified “Golden Rice,” an almost identical product to the “Golden Grains” of the play, is close to being approved for human consumption by the World Food Organization. As farmers riot in the Philippines destroying test crops, a new debate emerges, driving the story into the public consciousness.
