Téa Obreht

in conversation with R. O. Kwon

Thank you all so much for taking the time to tune in to Book Passage’s Conversations with Authors to hear R. O. Kwon and myself reflect on process, character, and what makes us write. Supporters like you keep writers’ worlds turning, and keep places like Book Passage at the center of our community in this time of incredible crisis. So much has changed in the weeks since we met; our country has, for the most part, unified in a long-overdue reckoning with racial injustice and police violence. Some of the books R.O. Kwon and I talked about were Natalie Diaz’s Postcolonial Love Poem, Yiyun Li’s Where Reasons End, and Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. In celebration of Black voices, I’d also like to recommend Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward; Survival Math by Mitchell S. Jackson; The Turner House by Angela Flournoy; Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi; American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson; Delicious Foods by James Hannaham; as well as Bryan Washington’s collection of short stories, Lot, which just won the Dylan Thomas Prize, and Mychal Denzel Smith’s upcoming Stakes Is High.

—Téa
