Writing Classes

Class: Adrian Tiller - Writing About Family

Saturday, September 14, 2013 - 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Sat., Sept. 14 • 2:00-5:00pm • $50

Our family provided our first relationships, as well as our first conflicts. There is no richer source of raw material, whether we write fiction, memoir, or poetry. We will use family stories to improve our skills with the various elements of fiction (character, plot, dialogue, description and conflict). Adrian Tiller is a writer, teacher, and licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. He has created numerous workshops and taught graduate students at Dominican University.

Class: Molly Giles - Short Story Repair

Saturday, September 14, 2013 - 10:00am to 4:00pm

Sat., Sept. 14 • 10:00-4:00pm • $120

This is your chance to fix short stories that are "almost there" -- the little heartbreakers that are still not exactly right. Often it just takes a slight adjustment, but sometimes it takes a sharp kick, and this class offers both. Molly Giles is a novelist and short story writer. She teaches at the University of Arkansas and is an editor for Penguin Putnam. Giles has worked with Amy Tan and many other successful writers.

Class: Beth Kephart - Handling the Truth

Saturday, September 7, 2013 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

Sat., Sept. 7 • 10:00-12:00pm • $40

Your memoir begins with you, but other matters are at stake—tone and truth, tense and structure. For this writing workshop, bring a photograph of yourself at a critical turning point, a pen and paper, and a favorite spice. Through a series of guided exercises, we’ll work together to hone voice, identify meaning, and craft a memorable memoir scene.

Beth Kephart’s first memoir was a National Book Award finalist, and she has written four more. Her new book is Handling the Truth: On the Writing of Memoir, which was featured in O Magazine as a top writing book and has received multiple starred reviews. Kephart teaches memoir at the University of Pennsylvania and writes about the form in publications ranging from Chicago Tribune and Huffington Post to Creative Nonfiction and The Millions. She blogs daily and her ideas about memoir, as well as some recent memoir reviews, can be found here: http://beth-kephart.blogspot.com/p/handling-truth.html
