Join acclaimed National Geographic and Gadling.com travel writer and editor Don George for a day of exploration and travel writing in beautiful Point Reyes. George demonstrates the art of finding, researching, and note-taking in the field. Participants will explore the shops and sites of this seaside town, as well as the rolling hills and sweeping ocean views. The group gathers over a picnic lunch to talk about the writing experience and to discuss their work. Lunch and transportation included.

The idea behind “Together Stories” is deliciously simple and wonderfully addictive: using storytelling to forge a bond between the young and the old. Learn how to create a collaborative story using a sequential back-and-forth method via email. Writing a story with a child is a unique way to gain insight into a child’s thoughts—and the kids love it! Susanne Pari is a novelist, essayist, and author of The Fortune Catcher. Sheila Gordon was one of the original organizers the Kidney Foundation Authors Luncheon. She has written a Together Story with her granddaughter Emily.

This workshop focuses on the basic craft elements of fine storytelling: plot, character, point of view, setting, imagery, dialogue, description, pacing, voice, and theme. After deconstructing the skill-set of some brilliant authors, participants will write from prompts, beginning a novel or short story which they will then read and discuss with fellow participants.

Ethel Rohan is the author of two story collections: Goodnight Nobody, and Cut Through the Bone.

Transform the stories of your life into fiction! We’ll practice accessing memory, mining our family myths for their dramatic potential, and creating memorable characters from the people we know. Audrey Ferber’s fiction and essays have appeared in journals and anthologies. She teaches writing at UC Extension.
