Big, small, curly, straight, loud, quiet, smooth, wrinkly. Lovely explores a world of differences that all add up to the same thing: we are all lovely!

Jess Hong earned a degree in illustration at the Academy of Art in 2016. It was there that she developed a passion for children’s book illustration and where Lovely was born. Being terribly near-sighted, heavily tattooed, and Asian-American are some of the things that make her lovely.

Selena Bartlett - Smashing Mindset (Sausalito)

Thursday, January 11, 2018 - 6:00pm

We can't change our ticket in the genetic lottery, but we can control what we do about it. It takes daily work and practice, but it gets easier. Consider Smashing Mindset a roadmap -- a user's manual for taking charge of your life. Learn how your brain works; how to recognize the patterns that keep it locked up, repeating the past; and how to apply simple strategies to change it.

Dr. Selena Bartlett will also discuss Trace It to Erase It: Tap Into Brainpower to Be Happy and Healthy, an easy to follow guidebook that uses tracing and other fun techniques to help you learn how to tap into brainpower.

Dr Bartlett’s scientific career has been driven by a mission to understand the brain, in order to improve the brain health lives of people. The underpinning narrative of her research and work is to revolutionise the way society understands and deals with brain health. She became a neuroscientist some 25 years ago, ignited by the unnecessary suffering endured by her sister because she came to feel it resulted from a general lack of understanding as to how the brain works.

Bevan Atkinson - The Emperor Card (Sausalito)

Tuesday, January 30, 2018 - 6:00pm

Xana Bard comes home one muggy afternoon to find a murdered man in her back yard. Knowing that even with an airtight alibi she and anyone living with her will be a suspect, she warns her off-the-grid lover Thorne Ardall to stay away until the murderer is caught. How will Xana unravel the mystery of the body in the back yard? How will World War II, gold fever, and a road trip with DeLeon Davies at the wheel factor into solving the murder? And when will the insufferably hot weather ever cool down?

If you’ve ever had a tarot card reading, or even if you haven’t, Bevan Atkinson’s Tarot Mystery series is a fascinating and engaging journey into the Royal Road that is the tarot. Her protagonist, Xana Bard, reads cards for Querents who all too often end up dead. In the latest book, The Emperor Card, the murder occurs entirely too close to home.

Bevan Atkinson has been a writer since receiving the Prose Award at Winchester-Thurston School in Pittsburgh, PA. She wrote business documents of all kinds in corporate environments (Pacific Bell, The Bank of California, MHI Global, etc.), and was the Director of Retail Training for Apple Computer, designing and developing the training for the most successful retail launch in history. Ms. Atkinson is a long-time tarot reader, and after venturing briefly into fiction writing with a children's book, and then an original screenplay, she began The Tarot Mystery series in 2006 with "The Fool Card." Her aim is to complete a 22-book series based on the Major Arcana of the tarot, doing for the tarot what Sue Grafton has done for the alphabet. As an homage to Ms. Grafton, in the series one of Xana Bard's dogs is named Kinsey.

Special Children's Event!

..........................................................................................................................

If I Had a Horse is an inspiring, self-reflective picture book with simple text and gorgeous, impressionistic artwork from acclaimed author-illustrator Gianna Marino.

If I had a horse, he might be shy, like me.
But if I stayed quiet, he’d learn to be my friend.
I would have to tame him. I would have to be strong, like him. And he would have to be gentle, like me.
And together, we could do anything.

Marino’s vibrant, silhouetted art brings to life this picture book about understanding, stepping beyond boundaries, and bravery.

Gianna Marino was born in San Francisco and spent her early years galloping horses through Golden Gate Park. Her explorations expanded after graduating from high school and in order to afford her many journeys, Gianna had several jobs at once: apprenticing a muralist, a jewelry designer, a product designer and driving horse carriages through the park. Gianna explored many corners of the world, from Africa and Asia, to the South Pacific and Europe, to crewing on sailboats in the high seas. At work and school, she became known as “Boomerang”. Gianna finally landed a full-time freelance gig designing toys for children, but after several years in a corporate box with no windows, she left for good and began writing and illustrating books for children. Her books include Meet Me at the Moon, Following Papa’s Song, Too Tall Houses, and Night Animals. Though she still wanders the world, Gianna now lives in Northern California and works full-time writing and illustrating.

Kim Steinhardt - The Edge (Sausalito)

Thursday, January 18, 2018 - 6:00pm

The Pacific coast is the most iconic region of California and one of the most fascinating and rapidly changing places in the world. Densely populated, urbanized and industrialized — but also home to wilderness with complex, fragile ecosystems — the coast is the place where humanity and nature coexist in a precarious balance that is never perfectly stable.

The Edge is a dramatic snapshot of the California coast’s past, present and probable future in a time of climate change and expanding human activity. Written by Kim Steinhardt and Gary Griggs, two marine experts who grew up on the coast, The Edge is both a celebration of the coast’s natural and cultural uniqueness and a warning of the many complex changes that threaten that uniqueness.

The Edge examines the current state of the coast’s natural and social environments, gives the historical causes for the coast’s present endangerment and offers informed projections on possible scenarios of the coast’s future. A masterful and sweeping synthesis of environmental and social science, The Edge presents a comprehensive portrait of the history, people, communities, industries, ecology and wildlife of the California coast.

Join Kim Steinhardt for this special evening that will include sharing his personal recollections of the citizen led effort to create the San Francisco’s Richardson Bay Sanctuary, along with rarely seen images of that successful campaign.

Kim Steinhardt delivers popular lectures and photographic programs on coastal conservation and ocean advocacy for aquariums and marine centers, universities, state parks and other audiences. He is currently working with National Geographic Books for release next year of a collection of his otter photographs and coastal storytelling.

Classic novels and crime solving intertwine in Katherine Bolger Hyde's charming series. Bloodstains with Bronte is the second in a series that will puzzle and please fans of mystery and masterpieces alike.

Windy Corner is being remodeled into a writers' retreat. Two of the young workers, Jake and Roman, are showing too much of the wrong kind of interest in Katie, Emily's young single-mother housekeeper.

It's a stormy autumn and Emily is reading Wuthering Heights. Roman, a dark and brooding type, reminds her of Heathcliff. At a Halloween murder mystery fundraiser at Windy Corner, someone is found stabbed to death. Windy Corner's very own detective, Luke, is reluctantly forced to investigate Katie.

Luke digs into the background of the contractor, Jeremiah Edwards, and Emily, now reading Jane Eyre, realizes Jeremiah resembles St. John Rivers in his obsessive, tormented piety. Will Luke figure out who the murderer is before Katie ends up in jail or someone else is killed?

Katherine Bolger Hyde has lived her life surrounded by books, from teaching herself to read at age four to majoring in Russian literature to making her career as an editor. She lives in California with her husband. She is the author of Arsenic and Austen.

It's a bird. It's a plane. No. It's Father Coffee. He flies. He renders himself invisible. He harangues his parishioners. In each of these comical stories the magical and whimsical Father Coffee struggles to heal and to trick his parishioners into compassion and love. Here is a 1950's small town priest who is at once spiritual and earthy, ribald and holy. Set in a 1950's rural town in California, The Gospel According to Father Coffee, is a fast moving, unusual, magical story of redemption through trickery. The town's lives, rich and poor, young and old, are revealed as Father Coffee night-flies, becomes invisible and delivers pagan sermons astonishing his parishioners. Through these stories, told in vignettes, each one with a twist, the magical Father Coffee discovers redemption for himself and his town through his magical skills. Many of these tales are informed by the world trickster stories of the native American Coyote, Zen parables, The Dead Sea Scrolls as well as the Sufi stories of Nasrddin Hoja.

William Vlach’s poetry has been published in the United States and the United Kingdom. Both his playwriting and parody have won writing awards. William has published essays on diverse topics such as police psychology, the history of health care ethics, film noir, and the psychology of genocide. His newest novel, The Gospel According to Father Coffee (William Collins Publishing, London), was released in the summer of 2017. Currently he is completing his second historical novel, The Naked Greek and a satire entitled, Ricky, Ghost Boy of General.
