Stephen Bloom - The Audacity of Inez Burns (San Francisco Store)

Saturday, March 17, 2018 - 1:00pm

In The Audacity of Inez Burns, Stephen Bloom, the author of the bestselling Postville, reveals a jagged slice of lost American history. From Inez's riveting tale of glamour and tragedy, he has created a brilliant, compulsively readable portrait of an unforgettable woman during a moment when America's pendulum swung from compassion to criminality by punishing those who permitted women to control their own destinies.

Stephen Bloom is an award-winning journalist and author of four critically acclaimed nonfiction books. He has been a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, and a senior writer in San Francisco for the Sacramento Bee. Bloom's work has appeared in many magazines, newspapers, and websites, including Smithsonian, The New York Times Magazine, Chicago Tribune Magazine, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, London Guardian, Salon, Best New Writing 2016, National Public Radio, and The Atlantic. He is a professor of journalism at the University of Iowa.

Denise Lee Yohn - Fusion (San Francisco Store)

Tuesday, March 13, 2018 - 6:00pm

Tickets: $36.50 (includes signed book)

For years, leaders at companies like Southwest, Starbucks, and Google have done something differently that's put their organizations at the top of "the most admired companies," "best brands," and "great workplaces" lists. They don't often talk about that "something" specifically in terms of brand-culture fusion, but, as author Denise Lee Yohn reveals, aligning and integrating their brands and cultures is precisely how they've achieved their successes.

Independently, brand and culture are powerful, unsung business drivers. But Denise shows that when you fuse the two together to create an interdependent and mutually-reinforcing relationship between them, you create organizational power that isn't possible by simply cultivating one or the other alone. Through detailed case studies from some of the world's greatest companies (including Amazon, Airbnb, Adobe, Nike, and Salesforce), exclusive interviews with company executives, and insights from Denise's 25+ years working with world class brands, Fusion provides readers with a roadmap for increasing competitiveness, creating measurable value for customers and employees, and future-proofing their business.

For readers interested in workplace culture, brand management, strategy, leadership, employee experience, employee engagement, integration, branding, and organization development.

Blending a fresh perspective, over twenty-five years of experience, and a talent for inspiring audiences, San Francisco-based Denise Lee Yohn is the author of What Great Brands Do and a leading authority on building and positioning exceptional brands.

Ed Wong - Growing Up in San Francisco's Chinatown (San Francisco Store)

Saturday, March 3, 2018 - 1:30pm

Chinese American baby boomers who grew up within the twenty-nine square blocks of San Francisco's Chinatown lived in two worlds. Elders implored the younger generation to retain ties with old China even as the youth felt the pull of a future sheathed in red, white and blue. The family-owned shops, favorite siu-yeh (snack) joints and the gai-chongs where mothers labored as low-wage seamstresses contrasted with the allure of Disney, new cars and football. It was a childhood immersed in two vibrant cultures and languages, shaped by both. In Growing Up in San Francisco's Chinatown, author Ed Wong brings to life Chinatown's heart and soul from its golden age.

Stephanie Wittels Wachs - Everything is Horrible and Wonderful (San Francisco Store)

Friday, March 2, 2018 - 6:00pm

Roseann Lake - Leftover in China (San Francisco Store)

Wednesday, February 21, 2018 - 6:00pm

In Conversation with Rui Ma

Forty years ago, China enacted the one-child policy, only recently relaxed. Among many other unintended consequences, it resulted in both an enormous gender imbalance―with a predicted twenty million more men than women of marriage age by 2020―and China’s first generations of only-daughters. Given the resources normally reserved for boys, these girls were pushed to study, excel in college, and succeed in careers, as if they were sons.

Now living in an economic powerhouse, enough of these women have decided to postpone marriage―or not marry at all―to spawn a label: "leftovers." Unprecedentedly well-educated and goal-oriented, they struggle to find partners in a society where gender roles have not evolved as vigorously as society itself, and where new professional opportunities have made women less willing to compromise their careers or concede to marriage for the sake of being wed. Further complicating their search for a mate, the vast majority of China’s single men reside in and are tied to the rural areas where they were raised. This makes them geographically, economically, and educationally incompatible with city-dwelling “leftovers,” who also face difficulty in partnering with urban men, given the urban men’s general preference for more dutiful, domesticated wives.

Part critique of China’s paternalistic ideals, part playful portrait of the romantic travails of China’s trailblazing women and their well-meaning parents who are anxious to see their daughters snuggled into traditional wedlock, Roseann Lake’s Leftover in China focuses on the lives of four individual women against a backdrop of colorful anecdotes, hundreds of interviews, and rigorous historical and demographic research to show how these "leftovers" are the linchpin to China’s future.

Roseann Lake is The Economist’s Cuba correspondent. She was previously based in Beijing, where she worked for five years as a television reporter and journalist. Her China coverage has appeared in Foreign Policy, Time, The Atlantic, Salon, and Vice, among others. She lives between New York City and Havana.
