Special Children's Event: Kathryn Otoshi - Draw the Line (Corte Madera)

Sunday, October 15, 2017 - 1:00pm

Draw the Line is a powerful and poignant picture book about forgiveness from Kathryn Otoshi, author of the bestselling book One.

When two boys draw their own lines and realize they can connect their lines together—magic happens! But a misstep causes their lines to get crossed.

Push, pull, tug, yank!
Soon their line unravels into an angry tug-of-war.

With a growing rift between then, will the boys ever find a way to come together again?

Award-winning author/illustrator Kathryn Otoshi uses B&W illustrations with thoughtful splashes of color to create a powerful, multi-layered statement about friendship, boundaries, and healing after conflict.

Kathryn Otoshi is an award-winning author-illustrator, best known for her character-building number/color book series: One, Zero, and Two. She is also the co-author of Beautiful Hands, a book about possibilities and reaching your dreams. Special Children's Event: Dave Eggers & Shawn Harris - Her Right Foot (Corte Madera)

Saturday, October 14, 2017 - 5:00pm

In this fascinating, fun take on nonfiction, uniquely American in its frank tone and honest look at the literal foundation of our country, acclaimed author Dave Eggers and debut illustrator Shawn Harris investigate a seemingly small trait of America's most emblematic statue, her raised right foot.

What they find is about more than history, more than art. What they find in the Statue of Liberty's right foot is the powerful message of acceptance that is essential to the story of America.

Originally scheduled for publication in 2018, the creators and Chronicle Books were inspired by events in the United States at the beginning of 2017 to bring Her Right Foot to young readers as soon as possible. The need to offer welcome to new Americans is needed now more than ever.

Dave Eggers is the author of many books, including This Bridge Will Not Be Gray, The Circle, and A Hologram for the King. He is the cofounder of: Voice of Witness, an oral-history series focused on human-rights crises; 826 National, a network of writing and tutoring centers; and ScholarMatch, which connects donors and under-resourced students to make college possible. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Shawn Harris is an artist and musician who lives and works in Morongo Valley, California. This is his first book.

Patricia Polacco - Remembering Vera (Sausalito)

Friday, October 6, 2017 - 6:00pm

Special Children's Event!

Remembering Vera begins in 1962 when a stray dog was found under a pile of boxes in a Coast Guard warehouse in what used to be called Government Island, the Coast Guard Base in San Francisco Bay, when a seaman named Dave Bunch was mopping the floor. It was love at first sight. At first the men decided to hide the pup from the Commander, thinking she wouldn’t be allowed. But soon enough all of the men in the barracks fell hard for the little dog. Then one day when high waves challenged another vessel at sea, it was Vera’s fierce determination and natural swimming ability that brought the life preserver and safety line to the sinking boat. Vera became a hero and the beloved pet and mascot of the San Francisco Coast Guard.

Patricia Polacco belongs to a family of storytellers, poets, farmers, teachers, and artists. They came from many parts of the world, but mainly Russia. She grew up to be an illustrator, a designer, and creator of many beloved children’s books, including The Keeping Quilt, The Blessing Cup, Fiona’s Lace, The Trees of the Dancing Goats, Babushka’s Doll, and My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. She lives in Union City, Michigan. Visit her at PatriciaPolacco.com and follow her on Facebook.

SF-Marin Food Bank Benefit: Todd Parr - Love the World (Corte Madera)

Saturday, September 30, 2017 - 11:00am

10% of Proceeds from Book Sales to Benefit SF-Marin Food Bank!

Come celebrate the release of Todd Parr’s latest book, Love the World, and help feed your neighbors in need at the same time.  Todd has decided to turn his launch party at Book Passage in Mill Valley into a fundraiser for his new friends at the SF-Marin Food Bank.  With 1 in 5 people in need of food assistance in Marin County alone, it’s more important than ever that we all band together to make sure families, children, seniors and people with disabilities all have access to healthy, nutritious food. SF-Marin Food Bank will have food collection barrels at the event and someone on hand to collect additional donations and volunteer names.

Todd Parr is the award-winning author and illustrator of more than 40 children’s books. Empathy is at the core of Todd’s stories; they are about acceptance, differences, and promoting empowerment for kids in a simple, fun way. Through his books, Todd has partnered with Target, Reach Out and Read, People Magazine, and several other organizations to promote reading. He has created merchandise for Macy’s, developed his own children’s clothing line, and had work displayed in the windows of FAO Schwarz.

About SF-Marin Food Bank

The SF-Marin Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin, where one in four neighbors is at risk of hunger. We envision a community where everyone is able to obtain enough nutritious food in a dignified manner to support the health and well-being of themselves and their families. We address hunger head on: from our pantry network and home-delivered groceries, to our nutrition-education classes and food-stamp enrollment, we work in many ways to nourish and empower neighbors in need.  We are on target to distribute more than 48 million pounds of food this year, 60% of which is fresh fruits and vegetables. Learn more at www.sfmfoodbank.org.
