Alexandria Giardino - Ode to an Onion (Corte Madera)

Saturday, September 8, 2018 - 4:00pm

Special Children's Event!

Ode to an Onion is a poetic, beautifully illustrated picture book inspired by "Ode to the Onion" by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). Pablo has a lunch date with his friend Matilde, who shows the moody poet her garden. Where Pablo sees conflict and sadness, Matilde sees love and hope. The story is less a biography of Neruda and his muse, Matilde Urrutia (1912-1985), and more a simple ode to a vegetable that is humble and luminous, dark and light, gloomy and glad, full of grief and full of joy -- just like life.

Alexandria Giardino is a writer and translator. Her work includes translating My Life with Pablo Neruda by Matilde Urrutia and her essays have appeared in the Village Voice Literary Supplement, Marie Claire, Discover, American Poetry Review, and on air at KQED. Giardino lives with her family in Northern California. Ode to an Onion is her first children's book. Felicita Sala is the illustrator of several picture books. Sala lives in Rome with her family.

Special Event for Kids!

Love Is Love empowers young readers to celebrate the family they have—no matter how it's constructed.

And it's love that makes a family.

Dr. Michael Genhart is clinical psychologist specializing in working with children who have gay or lesbian parents; gay teens and coming out issues; same sex relationships; and LGBTQ parenting matters. Ed Steckley - Rube Goldberg's Simple Normal Humdrum School Day (San Francisco Store)

Saturday, March 17, 2018 - 10:00am

Special Children's Event!

Join us for a Saturday morning story time with the illustrator of Rube Goldberg's Simple Normal Humdrum School Day. A must for young inventors, tinkerers and makers.

Inspired by her grandfather, cartoonist Rube Goldberg, Jennifer George mixes humor and education in Rube Goldberg’s Simple Normal Humdrum School Day. Readers follow Rube as he sets out on a typical school day, overcomplicating each and every step from the time he wakes up in the morning until the time he goes to bed at night. If Rube’s inventions are any indication, “normal” means something very different in the Goldberg household. For Rube, up is down, in is out, and the simplest path to accomplishing an everyday task—like brushing his teeth or getting dressed—is a humorously complicated one.

Ed Steckley is an award-winning illustrator whose clients include MAD magazine and innumerable advertising agencies worldwide. He lives in Queens, New York.
