Special Story Time Guest: Danielle Anderson-Craig - The Magic of We (Corte Madera Store)

Monday, November 5, 2018 - 9:30am

Special Event for Kids!

The Magic of We is a children's picture book by Danielle Anderson-Craig and illustrated by her friend and fellow teacher (they teach at same school!), Carly Dooling. It is a tender tale of blossoming friendship in which two children meet and are transported into a world where the ordinary becomes fantastic and the known becomes surreal as their shared experience creates unlimited imagination and play. The refrain "Being with you..." reverberates throughout the pages of detailed imagery, lush with color and imagination. A first book for both Anderson-Craig and Dooling, The Magic of We combines the magic of music and the music of words to describe the amazing feeling of finding someone who "fits" you.

Poet and kindergarten school teacher Danielle Anderson-Craig was the longtime love of the late organ and keyboard player Ikey Owens. Anderson-Craig wrote the The Magic of We as an homage and a celebration of connection and closeness. She graduated from the University of Southern California with an American Studies & Ethnicity/Philosophy degree. Her work as an educator of primary school aged children spans over 15 years, with most of her experience in the Montessori environment.

Bethanie Murguia - Do You Believe in Unicorns? (Sausalito Store)

Saturday, November 10, 2018 - 11:00am

Special Event for Kids!

Is believing in magic the key to seeing a unicorn? If you keep your eyes open to wonder, the possibilities are endless.

Is that a horse wearing a hat? It’s definitely not a unicorn in disguise — that would be ridiculous, right? It’s probably just a horse that’s having a bad hair day. Or trying to keep the sun out of its eyes. Or perhaps this horse just really likes hats! If you follow it long enough, maybe it will take off its hat and you’ll finally know for sure. Or will you? It’s all a matter of perspective in Do You Believe in Unicorns? -- a cheerful, cheeky story about seeing magic in the everyday.

Bethanie Murguia is the author-illustrator of several picture books, including I Feel Five!, The Best Parts of Christmas, and The Too-Scary Story.

Sandra V. Feder - Bitter & Sweet (Corte Madera Store)

Sunday, October 21, 2018 - 11:00am

Special Event for Kids

When Hannah's family has to move, her grandmother tells her how she felt leaving the old country -- it was both bitter and sweet. As Hannah leaves her friends behind and tries to get used to a new house, she only feels bitterness. Was her grandmother wrong about the sweetness?

Hannah starts to feel better about the move when she sees her new house in the soft light of the Shabbat candles. When a new friend reaches out with a special gift, Hannah realizes that sweetness can come from unexpected places and that she can even create some herself.

Featuring art by acclaimed illustrator Kyrsten Brooker, Bitter and Sweet subtly conveys a universal message -- while life can be full of challenging moments, sweeter ones can be found and created. An author's note is included on the concept of bitter and sweet in Jewish culture.

Sandra V. Feder is the author of The Moon Inside, illustrated by Aimée Sicuro, as well as the popular Daisy series of early chapter books. She tries to appreciate the sweet parts of life and hopes her stories bring joy to others. She lives in Burlingame, California.

Alexandria Giardino - Ode to an Onion (Corte Madera)

Saturday, September 8, 2018 - 4:00pm

Special Children's Event!

Ode to an Onion is a poetic, beautifully illustrated picture book inspired by "Ode to the Onion" by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). Pablo has a lunch date with his friend Matilde, who shows the moody poet her garden. Where Pablo sees conflict and sadness, Matilde sees love and hope. The story is less a biography of Neruda and his muse, Matilde Urrutia (1912-1985), and more a simple ode to a vegetable that is humble and luminous, dark and light, gloomy and glad, full of grief and full of joy -- just like life.

Alexandria Giardino is a writer and translator. Her work includes translating My Life with Pablo Neruda by Matilde Urrutia and her essays have appeared in the Village Voice Literary Supplement, Marie Claire, Discover, American Poetry Review, and on air at KQED. Giardino lives with her family in Northern California. Ode to an Onion is her first children's book. Felicita Sala is the illustrator of several picture books. Sala lives in Rome with her family.
