Writing Tools for the Digital Age

Introduction

Writing required a hand-held instrument for thousands of years. Priests copied the Bible by tediously copying another Bible, line by line, before Gutenberg lightened their burden.

More than 500 years later, the personal computer created the next major revolution (no offense to the typewriter, but you don’t see many of them any more). Today, we are blessed with thousands of digital writing tools, but our writing isn’t as simple as typing words on a page.

If you’re still using MS Word or another traditional word processing program for all of your writing, this class will create the same revolution in your writing process as Gutenberg’s printing press did for the priests.

Word Processing Isn’t Enough

Fortunately, whether you're blogging, freelancing or writing a book, there are hundreds, probably thousands, of applications providing valuable tools that can be personalized to your specific writing process, strengthen your writing platform, and make your writing flexible, portable and secure.

They include some of these features:

  • Research notes
  • Writing notes
  • Outlines
  • Mind Maps
  • Annotation
  • Editing
  • Timelines
  • Bibliographies
  • … and much more.

By integrating a variety of these tools,  I can help you build an arsenal of proven tools that will make you a writing ninja very quickly.

It will also give you a much deeper and richer writing environment so that your final product will be that much more powerful and compelling.

Class Structure

This class takes place in two, 2 hour sessions.

The First Session

The class is structured in this manner so we can initially review a series of proven programs to support your writing process. It is likely that each student will discover different tools that work best, so we’ll discuss some of the key features of various applications and how they can be integrated into your writing process.

The Second Session

The second session is scheduled to give you time to explore some of the applications discussed in Session 1 … on your own so you can determine which ones will fit into your writing process. Most applications have free trials, and wherever possible, I’ll arrange discounts for purchase when you’ve chosen an application that will help you. In any case, most of these tools are inexpensive and their value will easily exceed their cost.

  • If you want to move quickly following the first class, I’d suggest taking the second class one week later.
  • If you need more time, you can wait an additional week or two (depending on when you enroll) for the second session.

Each of the second sessions will be the same. There will be plenty of time to discuss your findings, explore additional features and to answer your questions about how to fit different applications into your writing process.

You will also be provided with my contact information and a private users group so I can help you between sessions and after the classes are finished.

October Schedule

For October, 2018, the first session will be on Thursday, October 3 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

The second session can be scheduled either one week or three weeks after the introductory session:

  • Thursday, October 10 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
  • Thursday, October 24 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

If you want to become a more efficient and effective writer, make all of your research and writing notes easily accessible and incorporate tools like mind maps, outlines and timelines into your writing process, join me and take your writing to the next level.

P.S. While most of the applications we’ll discuss will work on both the Apple and PC platform, a few of them will be for Apple only devices, but with PC equivalents.

Class: Betsy Graziani Fasbinder - From Page to Stage (Corte Madera Store)

Saturday, October 27, 2018 - 10:00am

Saturday October 27, 2018 • 10:00 am- 5:00 pm • $100

Moving From Page to Stage: A Workshop on Essential (and Super Simple) Public Speaking Skills for Writers

Writers hear all the time about how important it is to create a “platform” to make your work visible in the world. Nobody tells you that it’s YOU that will have to stand on that platform and speak in public.

You—whatever your genre, style, and publishing path—are the most essential element of your writer’s platform. It makes sense to invest some energy into

This hands-on, interactive workshop will give you the skills, tools, practice, and feedback you need to bring your best, most confident and authentic self to audiences of any size. Whether your goal is to inform, inspire, or simply to entertain, you’ll learn to design what you want to say as well as how you want to say it.

In this workshop, you will:

•    Discover your personal strengths and challenges in public speaking and learn simple delivery skills that help you be your natural, authentic best in front of audiences of any size

•    Eliminate distracting habits, instead learning to move and speak with intention and impact

•    Gather techniques for managing nervousness, and transforming nervous energy into powerful presence

•    Utilize your skills to engage and captivate listeners and engage their emotions, curiosity, and passion

•    Learn a simple and efficient method for designing content that is customized for every type of event

•    Transform public speaking into storytelling by employing the devices and techniques you already know for your writing

•    Learn how to separate your inner critic from your inner coach by privately viewing your own recordings and applying objective evaluation techniques

•    Practice an effective method for handling challenging questions, and challenging people during talks or interviews, and learn to defend your ideas without appearing defensive.

•    Develop an action plan for continued growth. Public speaking, like writing, is a skill that isn’t mastered in a day, but can develop for a lifetime. You’ll leave knowing what your next steps are for continued growth.

•    Gain confidence, in an atmosphere of fun, support, and camaraderie.

Every participant should bring:

•    A fully charged smart phone or pad with enough memory space to record several videos throughout the day
•    A phone charger
•    Ear buds or headphones for listening to recordings.

Included in the workshop fee is a copy of the instructor’s newest book: From Page to Stage: Inspiration, Tools, and Public Speaking Tips for Writers.

Betsy Graziani Fasbinder is an award-winning novelist and memoirist, a licensed therapist, and a public speaking coach who has empowered speakers from the reluctant to the downright phobic in Fortune 500 companies for more than 20 years. She now shares her expertise in coaching public speaking in her new book, From Page to Stage: Inspiration, Tools, and Public Speaking Tips for Writers. Reach her at www.betsygrazianifasbinder.com

Class: Selena Bartlett - Rewired for Life (Corte Madera Store)

Saturday, July 14, 2018 - 10:00am

Saturday July 14 • 10am-1pm • $120

Every person has the ability to learn how to overcome adversity or stress in their life by managing their emotional reactions and teaching the brain to be more resilient. This is something the brain can learn at any time. We have all heard about the role of a growth mindset in personal success and learning. That is, mindsets are not fixed but can grow. That is if you keep trying you will eventually get better. A key missing piece is knowing that a stressed out brain makes it difficult to develop a growth and resilient mindset. Dr Bartlett is a neuroscientist that has studied the brain for 25 years and has seen the brain’s great capacity to form new brain cells and change and learn forever. She has studied the role stress and adversity and its impact on the brain’s wiring and what it takes to help the brain to learn to become resilient. Because neurons that fire together wire together, this means a stressed brain becomes hard-wired and fixed over time. Therefore a resilient growth mindset starts with learning more about the brain, your mindset and how to turn stress-emotional reactions into healthier solutions. This workshop is all about learning the key brain steps that can take stress and turn it into a resilient mindset.

**Trace It to Erase It & Smashing Mindset: Train Your Brain to Reboot, Recharge, Reinvent Your Life (Miggi Matters #2) included in cost of class**

Selena Bartlett, Ph.D., is a group leader in neuroscience and obesity and a Professor at the Queensland University of Technology. Dr Bartlett has delivered many lectures, seminars, and workshops on the stress and its effects on the brain. She has written more than eighty scientific papers in neuroscience and therapeutics.
