Kate Schatz & Miriam Klein Stahl - Rad American Women A-Z

Saturday, May 9, 2015 - 11:00am

A Children's Book Week 2015 Event!

Other Children's Book Week Events:

Richard Leiter - The Flying Hand of Marco B.
Michael Buckley - Undertow

Like all A-Z books, Rad American Women A-Z illustrates the alphabet—but instead of "A is for Apple", A is for Angela—as in Angela Davis, the iconic political activist. B is for Billie Jean King, who shattered the glass ceiling of sports; C is for Carol Burnett, who defied assumptions about women in comedy; D is for Dolores Huerta, who organized farmworkers; and E is for Ella Baker, who mentored Dr. Martin Luther King and helped shape the Civil Rights Movement.

And the list of great women continues, spanning several centuries, multiple professions, and 26 diverse individuals. There are artists and abolitionists, scientists and suffragettes, rock stars and rabble-rousers, and agents of change of all kinds. American history was made by countless rad—and often radical—women. By offering a fresh and diverse array of female role models, we can remind readers that there are many places to find inspiration, and that being smart and strong and brave is rad.

Kate Schatz is a writer, editor, and educator. Her book of fiction, Rid of Me: A Story, was published in 2006 on Continuum Press as part of the acclaimed 33 1/3 series. Her writing has been published in Oxford American, Denver Quarterly, Joyland, and West Branch, among others, and her short story "Folsom, Survivor" was included as a "Notable Short Story" in Best American Short Stories 2011.

Miriam Klein Stahl is a Bay Area artist, educator and activist. In addition to her work in printmaking, drawing, sculpture, paper-cut and public art, she is also the co-founder of the Arts and Humanities Academy at Berkeley High School where she's taught since 1995.

Andrew Smith - The Alex Crow

Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - 6:30pm

Once again blending multiple story strands that transcend time and place, The Alex Crow author Andrew Smith tells the story of 15-year-old Ariel, a refugee from the Middle East who is the sole survivor of an attack on his small village. Now living with an adoptive family in Sunday, West Virginia, his story (beginning with a misplaced summer at a boys’ camp for tech detox) is juxtaposed against those of a schizophrenic bomber and the diaries of a failed arctic expedition from the late nineteenth century. Oh, and there’s also a robotic, reincarnated crow.

Andrew Smith knew ever since his days as editor of his high school newspaper that he wanted to be a writer. His books include Grasshopper Jungle and Winger.

Monday, February 23, 2015 - 6:30pm

In Edison's Alley, fourteen-year-old Nick has learned that the strange antiques in his attic bedroom were left there by the eccentric inventor Nikola Tesla. They are pieces of Tesla's Far Range Energy Emitter, capable of transmitting "free energy" to the globe. Members of the Accelerati, a menacing secret society of physicists, are on the hunt too however, and their brazen leader, Dr. Alan Jorgenson, will stop at nothing to foil Nick and steal the objects. It takes a dangerous build-up of electromagnetic energy in the atmosphere to reverse everyone's fortunes--and lead Nick to his destiny.

Katherine Applegate - The One and Only Ivan

Friday, January 16, 2015 - 6:00pm
Join INK and Katherine Applegate to celebrate the release of The One and Only Ivan in paperback!

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. She was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He is now a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation’s largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan is well known for his paintings, which he “signs” with a thumb-print.

Katherine Applegate’s many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide. Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

Anne Leonard - Moth and Spark

Tuesday, January 6, 2015 - 7:00pm

“The novel is something like a Russian nesting doll: it’s a Jane Austen novel inside a Princess Bride type fantasy romp inside a much darker Tolkien-esque story of politics, war, magic, and dragons.” — Charlie Lovett, author of The Bookman’s Tale

In Moth and Spark, Prince Corin has been chosen to free the dragons from their bondage to the power Mycenean Empire, but dragons aren’t big on directions. They have given him some of their power, but none of their knowledge. No one, not the dragons nor their riders, is even sure what keeps the dragons in the Empire’s control. Tam, sensible daughter of a well-respected doctor, had no idea before she arrived in Caithenor that she is a Seer, gifted with visions. When the two run into each other (quite literally) in the library, sparks fly and Corin impulsively asks Tam to dinner. But it’s not all happily ever after. Never mind that the prince isn’t allowed to marry a commoner: war is coming. Torn between his quest to free the dragons and his duty to his country, Tam and Corin must both figure out how to master their powers in order to save Caithen. With a little help from a village of secret wizards and rogue dragonrider, they just might pull it off.

Local author Anne Leonard has degrees from St. John’s College (B.A), the University of Pittsburgh (MFA), Kent State University (Ph.D), and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Gigi Pandian - The Accidental Alchemist

Thursday, January 15, 2015 - 6:00pm

Book Launch Event!

In The Accidental Alchemist, Zoe Faust, born in 1676 and perpetually 28-years-old, can transform homegrown herbs and veggies into vegan soups and smoothies to die for—an interest that makes her fresh start in Portland, Oregon seem the perfect plan. That is, until she unpacks a crate with a stowaway—the living gargoyle and gourmet French chef Dorian Robert-Houdin—and finds her hope of a fresh start squashed.

Dorian’s appearance is no accident. He needs her help to decipher an ancient text that brought him to life—or he will return to stone forever. An already impossible task is further complicated by the intrusion of fourteen-year-old hoodlum Brixton and the surprise visit of Detective Max Liu. Toss in a dead body on her doorstep and the theft of Dorian’s book, and Zoe’s first day in Portland is already a recipe for disaster. Now the only way to remedy the increasingly dire situation depends on Zoe’s ability to recall the alchemy of her past.

Gigi Pandian is the USA Today bestselling author of the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt mystery series. A cancer diagnosis in her 30s taught her two important life lessons: healing foods can taste amazing, and life’s too short to waste a single moment. Stephanie Shaw - A Cookie for Santa

Saturday, December 13, 2014 - 12:00pm

Special Event for Kids!

"The Gingerbread Man" mixes it up with "The Night Before Christmas" in this cleverly constructed Christmas story about a smart cookie who avoids becoming Santa's midnight snack. The rhyming verses are pitch-perfect in their cadence, with snappy rhyming pairs and bouncy energy just like that of the overactive puppies. Bold illustrations with a variety of perspectives include lots of close-ups of the Gingerbread Boy, drawing readers into his dilemma. The supersized horizontal format and capacious, mostly double-page spreads make this a natural choice for reading to a large group, but it would also work well for a family on Christmas Eve. A Cookie for Santa is a successful mixture of two classic ingredients that yields a sweet Christmas treat.

Stephanie Shaw is the author of Bedtime in the Meadow and Under the Sleepy Stars. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology. Her career has included being a teacher of children with severe emotional disabilities, children's counseling and school administration.
