Tim Floreen - Willful Machines

Wednesday, October 28, 2015 - 6:00pm

Young Adult Science Fiction Event!

In Willful Machines, scientists create what may be a new form of life: an artificial human named Charlotte. All goes well until Charlotte escapes, transfers her consciousness to the Internet, and begins terrorizing the American public. Charlotte's attacks have everyone on high alert, everyone except Lee Fisher, the closeted son of the US president. Lee has other things to worry about, like keeping his Secret Service detail from finding out about his crush on Nico, the eccentric, Shakespeare-obsessed new boy at school. And keeping Nico from finding out about his recent suicide attempt. And keeping himself from freaking out about all his secrets. But when attacks start happening at his school, Lee realizes he's Charlotte's next target. Even worse, Nico may be part of Charlotte's plan too. As Lee races to save himself, uncover Charlotte's plan, and figure out if he can trust Nico, he comes to a whole new understanding of what it means to be alive and what makes life worth living.

Tim Floreen majored in English at Yale and earned a Master's degree in creative writing at Boston University. He now lives in San Francisco with his partner and their two cats.

Sean Connolly - The Totally Irresponsible Science Kit

Monday, October 19, 2015 - 6:30pm

Special Children's Event!

The Totally Irresponsible Science Kit: 18 Daring Experiments for Young Scientists is the perfect gift for every curious kid interested in science that contains 18 experiments that snap, crackle, pop, ooze, crash, boom, and stink. Included is a 72-page book with step-by-step instructions for the 18 experiments, including notes on how long each experiment takes, the necessary ingredients, warnings when applicable, and the scientific excuse to do the experiment. Sure, it's a blast to send up a Soda Bottle Rocket, but it's also worth doing because it illustrates Newton's Third Law of Motion. And that messy and seemingly risky combination of ooze and electricity in the Static Electricity Slime? It demonstrates a fourth form of matter beyond solid, liquid, and gas a colloid. Packaged in the kit are four helpful instruments for young scientists: a lateral split-orb measuring spoon, a vacuumatic test tube, a matter-retaining measuring cup, and photon-refracting goggles. So go ahead: Encase a younger sibling in a giant soap bubble. Shoot a bolt of lightning from your fingertip. Any curious kid would be irresponsible not to try these experiments.

Sean Connolly has written more than 50 books for children and adults. A father of three, he's ideally suited to explain the nuts and bolts of these fantastic experiments.

Jennifer and Michael Grais - Christa's Luck

Friday, September 18, 2015 - 6:00pm

Christa Cassidy knows that she’s lucky. She lives with her parents and older sister on a small ranch in a beautiful part of the world; she has a grandmother who loves her; and she’s expecting a baby sister before the end of the summer. She even has her own horse named Lucky, but like any other teenager, she’s suspended between childhood and adulthood, unsure of her place in the world. She’s really only at home when she’s sitting on a horse, particularly when she’s trying to track the Lost Herd through the canyons around her home. When something horrible happens to Lucky, Christa’s world is upended, and things only get worse when it becomes clear that the Bureau of Land Management intends to round up the mustangs. With the help of a strong, troubled horse named Jenner, Christa is determined to figure out what’s going on. She soon finds that she must rein in her own passions as well as her horses, and that she won’t accomplish anything without friends and help. In the vein of The Horse Whisperer and The Black Stallion, Christa’s Luck: The Story of a Girl, Her Horse, and the Last Wild Mustangs is an epic adventure story of courage, friendship and freedom.

Jennifer Grais is a singer-songwriter who recorded several albums in Los Angeles and Nashville and toured as Jackson Browne’s background singer. She completed a year-long program of study with Linda Kohanov, best-selling author of The Tao of Equus, and Riding Between the Worlds, and began exploring a deeper relationship with horses. In December 2006, she was captivated by footage of a horse rescue that took place during a flood in the Netherlands at the hands of women riders. Research for the novel exposed Jennifer to the unfolding drama of the wild mustangs in the western United States.

Michael Grais has written and produced movies of domestic and international acclaim.  After a brief stint of writing for episodic television, he launched into features, and has written everything from romantic comedies to thrillers for seven Academy Award winning producers/directors.The first feature he wrote was Death Hunt, starring Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson, before co-writing the mega-hit Poltergeist with Steven Spielberg. Michael went on to write and produce Poltergeist II, Marked for Death  and Cool World. As Executive Producer, his credits include: Great Balls of Fire! and Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers. He is also a contributor in the book, Why We Write, in which 25 screenwriters communicated their experiences of becoming successful in Hollywood. Michael has taught filmmaking at University of New Mexico and in various workshops abroad. After attending New York University’s Film School and Emerson College, he earned his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon.

Cammie McGovern & Julie Murphy: Young Adult Author Event co-sponsored by Beyond Differences

Wednesday, October 7, 2015 - 6:00pm

Wed. October 7, 2015 ŸŸŸ• 6:00pm • Admission is free

Co-sponsored by Beyond Differences, a Marin-based non-profit aimed at ending social isolation among teens and empowering them to lead the movement to create an inclusive middle school culture, Book Passage is proud to host YA talents Cammie McGovern, author of A Step Toward Falling, and Julie Murphy, author of Dumplin', on their multi-city national tour with HarperCollins Children's Books!

Cammie McGovern writes about situations and characters that are not often seen in teen fiction. In A Step Toward Falling, she has created a story that features authentic experiences with amazing and memorable voices. Cammie brings heart, humor and empathy to subjects that are sometimes difficult, but important, to talk about. In A Step Toward Falling, we are introduced to Emily and Belinda. In Belinda, a character with developmental disabilities, Cammie has crafted a well-rounded character unlike many others in teen fiction, a voice that rings true in such a genuine way that it shines through the page to capture the imagination and hearts of readers.

In Dumplin’, Julie Murphy takes her writing to a whole new level of complexity and depth. Essentially the book is about body image and fat shaming—but it takes an unexpected turn. Will is a fearless, funny, and aspirational heroine. She is a self-proclaimed fat girl who has always been at home in her own skin. It is only when Will’s feelings for the local heartthrob are surprisingly reciprocated that her confidence is shaken and shadowed with doubt. In a market where the definition of beauty is terribly narrow, and YA protagonists are at times interchangeable, Dumplin’ introduces an important voice to the teen audience, breaking the mold on every level.
