A.E. Conran - The Lost Celt

Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 7:00pm

Co-Sponsored by Irish American Crossroads

The Lost Celt is the best kind of adventure story, full of taut suspense, riveting action, and, most importantly, humor and heart. Not to be missed!”—Katherine Applegate, Winner of the 2013 Newbery

Primed by their love of video war games pitching Romans against Celts, Mikey and Kyler are convinced that they’ve seen a real live Celtic warrior in the VA. Has the Celt been transported to the present as part of a secret defense project? In tracking him down, the boys solve the biggest mystery of their lives.

Drawing on the tales of Irish warrior hero Cuchulain, The Lost Celt was 60% funded by a group of Desert Storm Veterans. 20% of the net profits will go to veterans’ charities. When A. E. Conran was Mikey’s age she had a tin of tiny Roman and Celtic warriors, which she never finished painting, and a desire to time travel, which remains with her still. In addition to writing middle grade novels, A. E. Conran works as a freelance editor, as well as a children’s book consultant, book talker, and children’s book club facilitator for Book Passage.

Crossroads was founded to promote the discovery and understanding of the Irish experience in the Americas, and to ensure that the richness of the arts, culture, history, and traditions of this heritage are both held in high esteem and preserved for generations to come. Crossroads produces a variety of outstanding cultural and historical programs throughout the year, while also serving as a central hub of events information for the Irish and Irish-American communities of the Bay Area.

Dragon Mist Book Launch

Friday, December 11, 2015 - 6:00pm

Introducing . . . Dragon Mist . . . and meet the dynamic young authors from the Book Passage INK group who wrote it! Only kids could live it…only kids could write it.

All that Omara and Thrax have ever known is their little dreary island, covered in fog, controlled by a medicine man whom everybody fears and despises...until two outsiders wash up in a shipwreck on the beach and their life takes a whole new turn… Dragon Mist is the first book in a potential trilogy written by the members of INK, our dynamic book club for 10-13 year olds. You only have sit in on INK for a few minutes to realize that you’re surrounded by avid readers and natural storytellers who have an instinctive appreciation of character, world-building, and plot. So, creating a book was a natural progression. After a visit from Eric Elfman, screenwriter and co-author of middle grade novels Tesla’s Attic and Edison’s Alley, the INK members decided they wanted to write one of their own. After looking at a few web-tools, including some “Save the Cat” beat sheets, the group spent several sessions under the guidance of Amanda Conran, the book club facilitator, discussing setting, characters, backstory, and plot. Ideas were thrown out thick and fast and everyone agreed to the contents of each chapter before moving on. The whiteboard was filled, photographed, and then filled again. Between sessions INK members illustrated the characters, setting, and key moments in the book. Conran suggested brief descriptions of each chapter to ensure consistency, and the INK members then wrote the text. A couple more sessions were spent writing key moments and preparing the flap copy. And then? The book was ready for publication!

Please join us for our official book launch with readings by the authors on December 11, at 6pm. Net proceeds from the book will be given to “Giving Tree,” which gives books to disadvantaged children in our community.
