Amy Tan - An Evening with Amy Tan

Friday, August 9, 2013 - 8:00pm

Tickets: free for Travel Writers & Photographers Conference attendees, $10 for general public

Join Book Passage as we welcome renowned novelist Amy Tan for an evening of reading, discussion, and signing as part of our 2013 Travel Writers & Photographers Conference. Her bestselling books include The Joy Luck Club, Saving Fish From Drowning, and the forthcoming The Valley of Amazement:

Spanning more than forty years and two continents, The Valley of Amazement resurrects pivotal moments of the past: the collapse of China’s last imperial dynasty; the beginning of the Republic; the explosive growth of both lucrative foreign trade and bouts of antiforeign sentiment, which would have ramifications into the future. The lost world of old Shanghai is recaptured through the inner workings of courtesan houses and the lives of the foreign “Shanghailanders” living in the International Settlement, both erased by World War II. This deeply evocative narrative exposes the profound connections between mothers and daughters, which returns readers to the compelling territory Amy Tan so expertly mapped in The Joy Luck Club. With her characteristic insight and humor, she conjures a story of inherited trauma, desire and deception, and the power and obstinacy of love.

"...utterly engrossing..." - Edward Cone, Advanced Library Journal Reviews

"This was the kind of book I couldn't put down but was scared of finishing..." - Good Choice Reading

Ivy Pochoda & David Corbett - In Conversation

Thursday, July 25, 2013 - 5:00pm

Priority seating for Mystery Writers Conference attendees

Set against the rough-hewn backdrop of the New York waterfront in which the disappearance of a teenaged girl sends shock waves through her community, Visitation Street ($25.99) is a riveting literary mystery and a “gripping urban drama” from rising star Ivy Pochoda.

Ivy Pochoda is the author of The Art of Disappearing and has a BA from Harvard University in English and Classical Greek with a focus on dramatic literature and a MFA from Bennington College in fiction. She is a former professional squash player and now lives in Los Angeles with her husband.

“Visitation Street is urban opera writ large. Gritty and magical, filled with mystery, poetry and pain, Ivy Pochoda’s voice recalls Richard Price, Junot Diaz, and even Alice Sebold, yet it’s indelibly her own.” - Dennis Lehane

David Corbett worked as a private investigator for fifteen years before becoming the widely acclaimed author of four novels, with short fiction twice chosen for Best American Mystery Stories. He has taught at the UCLA Extension Writers' Program, 826 Valencia, Chuck Palahniuk's LitReactor, and the San Francisco Writers' Grotto.

"David Corbett has written a wise, inspiring love letter to all the imaginary creatures inside our minds—so we might conjure them whole on the page. I predict that massively underscored copies of The Art of Character will rest close at hand on writers’ desks for many years to come."—Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild and Torch
