Mystery Writers Conference: Tony Broadbent - The One After 9:09

Saturday, July 25, 2015 - 6:00pm

Mystery Writers Conference Event

The One After 9:09: A Mystery with a Backbeat opens in Liverpool in 1961. The city is about to explode with the sound of raw-edged rock 'n' roll—reborn screaming. Beat groups outnumber street gangs. Teddy Boys terrorise dance halls and clubs with flick-knives and bicycle-chains. Gangsters demand protection money and firebomb clubs that don't pay. But nothing can stop the beat. The beat goes on. The demand for drink, cigarettes, sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll just keeps growing. But The Beatles are going nowhere fast—and they know it. Liverpool's grown much too small. Hamburg has become a drag. It’s the same old grind—day in, night out. The big question: Who can get them a recording contract down in London—get them to ‘the toppermost of the poppermost’?

Only two men have vision enough to do it. Sam Leach—a pushy, local, rock ‘n’ roll mad promoter with towering dreams way beyond his means. And Brian Epstein—the sophisticated, urbane owner of a local record store. A group of rival promoters are plotting to push Sam Leach out of the business for good. The man convicted of beating, robbing, and blackmailing Brian Epstein has not only vowed to kill him, but is about to be released from prison. Everyone, it seems, wants to spoil the party.

Into the swelling scene steps art student Raymond Jones, an angry young man desperate to find something—someone—to believe in after the death of his dad in a road accident. Picasso, Pollock, and de Kooning don't have the answers. Neither do Kerouac, Camus, or Sartre. So, just maybe, he'll find his salvation in rock 'n' roll.

Tony Broadbent is the author of an award-winning series about a Cockney cat burglar in austerity-ridden, black-market-riddled, post-war London who gets blackmailed into working for MI5:The Smoke, Spectres in the Smoke, and Shadows in the Smoke. His short stories have appeared in the anthologies A Study In Sherlock and Mystery Writers of America: The Mystery Box.

2015 Travel Writers & Photographers Conference: An Evening with Susan Casey & Tim Cahill

Thursday, August 13, 2015 - 7:30pm

2015 Travel Writers & Photographers Conference Event
Free for Conferees; Tickets for General Public: $12

From Susan Casey, comes a breathtaking look into the mysterious world of dolphins and their conflicted history with man. Since the dawn of recorded history, humans have felt a kinship with the sleek and beautiful dolphin whose playfulness, sociability, and intelligence seems like an aquatic mirror of mankind. In recent decades, scientists have discovered dolphins recognize themselves in reflections, count, adorn themselves, rescue one another, deduce, form cliques, throw tantrums, and scheme. They are the stars of multimillion dollar aquatic theme parks, money that has fueled a sinister illicit trade as shown in the documentary Blackfish. The U.S. Navy has a secret program using dolphins as undersea soldiers. The theory that they are a superior, extraterrestial species is popular among the New Age fringe. They are the victims of brutal slaughters as depicted in the documentary The Cove. No writer is better positioned to portray these magical creatures than Susan Casey in her thrilling new book Voices in the Ocean: A Journey Into the Wild and Haunting World of Dolphins, imbedded with personal reporting, intense scientific research, and evocative prose.

Susan Casey is the development editor of Time Inc. She was previously the editor in chief of Sports Illustrated Women and an editor at large for Time Inc.'s 180 magazine titles. She also served as the creative director of Outside magazine, which received three consecutive, history-making National Magazine Awards for General Excellence. At Outside she was part of the editorial team that developed the stories behind Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm. Her writing has appeared in Esquire, Time, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. She lives in New York City.

Tim Cahill is a travel writer and founding editor of Outside magazine as well as an "Editor at Large" for the magazine. Cahill spent his childhood primarily in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Along with professional long-distance driver Garry Sowerby, Cahill set a world record for speed in driving the entire length of the American continents, from Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina up along the Pan-American Highway to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in twenty-three days, twenty-two hours, and forty-three minutes. This trip was the source material for his book Road Fever. He has written several books recounting his adventurous travel experiences and blends his own brand of humor into his stories. He is the author of several travel books including Jaguars Ripped My Flesh: Adventure is a Risky Business, A Wolverine is Eating My Leg, Pecked To Death By Ducks and many more. He is a frequent contributor to National Geographic Aventure magazine and currently lives in Livingston, Montana.

Pre-Conference Class: Hallie Ephron - Creating Memorable Characters

Thursday, July 23, 2015 - 1:00pm to 3:30pm

Where do these people come from? This session will step through the process of planning and developing memorable characters: from coming up with names to finding those telling details that ignite the character’s first turn on the stage. How to use narrative voice, dialogue, description and setting to illuminate character. And how to create a cast of characters that play off one another.

Pre-Conference Class: David Corbett - Innovative Plotting

Thursday, July 23, 2015 - 1:00pm to 3:30pm

The key to impactful writing is giving readers what they want in a way they don’t expect. Formulaic adherence to three-act structure cannot deliver that surprise. By focusing on story rather than structure, however, you can craft your plot around the use of hope, promise, and necessity to create the truly meaningful, dramatic, and emotionally powerful episodes that make a good story great. With special emphasis on character, co-chair David Corbett will guide participants on the essential starting points for any compelling story, key decision points that turn a story in surprising directions, and touchstone scenes such as the Inciting Incident, the Establishment of Opposites, the Point of No Return, the Mirror Moment, the Crisis of Insight, the Inescapable Decision, the Validation Scene, the Obligatory Scene, and the Climax.
