This workshop focuses on the basic craft elements of fine storytelling: plot, character, point of view, setting, imagery, dialogue, description, pacing, voice, and theme. After deconstructing the skill-set of some brilliant authors, participants will write from prompts, beginning a novel or short story which they will then read and discuss with fellow participants.

Ethel Rohan is the author of two story collections: Goodnight Nobody, and Cut Through the Bone.

This workshop focuses on crafting concise narratives for writers of both fiction and creative non-fiction. The class reads and examines successful short stories and essays in order to learn the art of selectivity in writing.

Class: Cynthia Pepper - Intro to the Short Film

Cynthia Pepper’s short films have won Emmy Awards and are distributed worldwide. This class discusses all the elements of translating a short story into a film. Topics include writing a simple treatment or screenplay, creating shooting boards, casting, finding locations, directing, producing, editing, and scoring a short film on a variety of budgets. Students may send a three sentence synopsis prior to the class (details upon registration).

Transform the stories of your life into fiction! We’ll practice accessing memory, mining our family myths for their dramatic potential, and creating memorable characters from the people we know. Audrey Ferber’s fiction and essays have appeared in journals and anthologies. She teaches writing at UC Extension.
