May 18th Recommendations 2023

Maurice (2+)
By Jessixa Bagley

This is a sweet story about an accordion playing busker who falls on hard times. It’s text heavy enough that I’d recommend it for older readers, at least 2 or 3. There are a few fun French phrases and some dialogue, which make it a great read aloud! A lovely, simple story about finding your inspiration again.

Big Tree (8+)
By Brian Selznick

This is a great one for nature lovers. It’s very illustration heavy and, like Selznick’s other books, is a bit of a brick – I think that makes it a great book for an emerging reader, because it has the feel of a very important book, while still being accessible to them! And it’s a beautiful gift. Be sure to look through it so you can admire the ways that the text and the illustrations work together to shape the story.

Little Thieves & Painted Devils (14+)
By Margaret Owen

is a retelling of the goose girl fairy tale, with a compelling romance and a dark fantasy edge. Some indie bookstores were lucky enough to get some beautiful art prints to accompany Painted Devils, and we have a nice stack tucked away with our other goodies in BP2! This is a very special gift for anyone who purchases a copy!
