Book Passage - about us

  The Book Passage Story

Book Passage laid claim to the title of the “Bay Area’s Liveliest Bookstore” years ago when it began hosting more than 800 author events per year. Since then, it has grown as we have added classes, conferences, children’s events, writers’ organizations, book groups, and all sort of other activities. The pandemic forced us to slow down some of these activities a bit, but we’ve now added a whole array of online events and classes over the last many months. Watch this space, as we update and collect the history and the stories behind Book Passage.

Not sure which book to give? Try a Book Passage Gift Certificate. Our Gift Certificates come either as an attractive gift card or as an online code that a child or parents can use on our website. Click here to find out about these two types of Gift Certificates.

Still not sure what book to give? Try a membership in the Aunt Lydia Book Club. This is a wonderful gift for friends and relatives, and an ideal choice for birthdays and baby showers. Our Aunt Lydia team surveys the tastes of gift recipients and sends them just the right book either monthly, quarterly, or as often as you want. It’s like having a personal shopper for bibliophiles. Each book comes gift-wrapped with a personal card to remind the recipient of your thoughtfulness. Click here to find out more.

With locations in Corte Madera and the San Francisco Ferry Building, Book Passage has been committed to serving the Bay Area community and readers of all ages since 1976. During that time Book Passage has hosted many thousands of author events. Those author presentations, plus dozens of classes and writing conferences held annually, have helped launch many literary careers. During the pandemic, Book Passage continues to present a diverse line-up of speakers, streaming internationally through the online “Conversations with Authors” series. These popular presentations will continue even when in-person events become safe once again.

Book Passage supports and uplifts many nonprofits and educational institutions by raising both awareness and financial support. In 2007, Book Passage and 10,000 Degrees welcomed then-Senator Barack Obama to a sold-out event. In addition to his speech about education that he gave to the supporters of 10,000 Degrees, Obama signed books and spoke one-on-one to the 10,000 Degrees students. Book Passage extends its community support through its used-book sales program in both its Corte Madera and Ferry Building stores. The sale of used books at both stores now benefits 10,000 Degrees.

Book Passage Corte Madera welcomes your used book donations. We accept contemporary books including fiction, mystery, biography, history, non-fiction, cookbooks, and kids books. They must be clean and in saleable condition. Hardcovers and paperbacks are welcome. We are unable to accept old, moldy, or dirty books, or textbooks of any sort. Please let us come to your car to select books. We are open between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm everyday. Thank you so much for your interest!
