How do you create tension on every page? As literary agent Donald Maass says, a constant stream of tension engages readers. Using published works as a jumping off point, we will spend the day making conflict happen by playing with diction, reader and character expectations, suspense, delay, and characters' conflicting emotion. The class is suitable for nonfiction and fiction writers. Nina Schuyler is the author of the novels The Translator and The Painting, and many short stories. She teaches creative writing in the graduate program at USF.

The body dragged down the hallway. The urgent assignation in the janitor’s closet. The bitter argument in the pick-up truck. While plot and character tend to get most of the credit, setting carries much of a story’s weight. Exploring setting is a surprisingly effective way to develop emotional depth and tension. In this course we’ll make maps, dissect landscapes, and find clues to the heart of our narrative: loose floorboards; the odor of disinfectant; dandelions wilting on the dashboard. Class: Brooke Warner - Your Outline: The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Countless writers dismiss the outlining process as something far too left-brained and linear, as something that interrupts their creative flow or puts boundaries on their characters or story. In this workshop, Brooke Warner offers a new way of thinking about outlining, and structure in general. Whether you're writing a prescriptive book, memoir, or novel, outlining will (a) provide support; (b) keep you on track; and (c) help you see the forest through the trees when you're in that murky middle place. Brooke is a champion of the outlining process, and helps writers who think that structure is their enemy understand why it must be treated more like a wise sage, with something important to give. Reframing our relationship with outlining not only contains the writing process in ways that can and do feel like a warm embrace, but it also serves writers down the road when they're ready to pitch their book to agents and editors because the work of the chapter summaries---and by extension the overview and the pitch---is largely complete. If you've ever felt stuck in your writing, outlining as a way of roadmapping your book, is one of the first things that can help you break free.

Class: Kerrin Meis- Modernism, Avante-Garde Art 1900-1940

What exactly was Modernism?  From our vantage point a century later we shall be examining the avant-garde movements in the visual arts in Europe from 1900 to 1940.   Modernism had its roots in the late nineteenth century when artists began a move toward abstraction albeit in very different ways.  Increasingly less reliant on nature they were interested in art for art's sake.  We shall see that in the high period of modernism, art divorced itself from its societal moorings and withdrew, supposedly to save its creative essence, from the real world.  There were certain artists who bucked this trend toward abstraction: the Surrealists, whose notion of reality fell entirely outside traditional views of the world and the artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit who addressed the problems of Weimar society.  One of the major debates during the period was about the role of art in our society. Arnold Schoenberg once declared that nothing done for a purpose could be art, whereas Picasso remarked that art was not something to hang on a wall but a weapon with which to attack an enemy,  We will begin with the Austrian Secession; Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka and move on to Germany : The artists of Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter. We'll encounter the Fauves in France: Matisse, Derain, et al. The pioneers of Cubism: Braque and Picasso, Orphism and the Delaunays will be followed by a study of the Italian Futurists. We will pay special attention to the Women artists of the Russian Avant-Garde as well as the enigmatic, colorful visions of Marc Chagall.  We will return to Germany to see what Kandinsky and Klee are teaching at the Bauhaus, to Holland, then Paris for the artists of de Stijl: Mondrian and Van Doesburg  and at the artists of Die Neue Sachlichkeit-- Then to Paris to see what was happening between the wars.  We conclude with Dada and the beginnings of Surrealism in the work of de Chirico, Miro, and Dali.
