Wilford Welch - In Our Hands (Sausalito)

Wednesday, January 31, 2018 - 6:00pm

In Our Hands shows you the exciting, satisfying roles you can play to solve the climate crisis and just how you can create a better world for yourself, your children, and grandchildren by getting engaged. The book explains why global warming and climate change do not have to be scary topics. It succinctly explains the science of global warming and the challenges it is causing, then offers a pathway to success. Looking back from 2050, the author presents two futures, one if we do take affective individual and collective actions, the other if we do not. The final chapter of thirty pages is filled with extraordinary resources for those who want to explore the issues further, from the shift to renewable energy to dealing with plastics and climate refugees.

As the subtitle suggests, this book is indeed a Handbook for Intergenerational Actions to Solve the Climate Crisis

Wilford Welch has been exploring the driving forces impacting our world for over five decades: as a U.S. diplomat in Asia; as an economic development and business consultant in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the U.S.; as the publisher of a world affairs magazine that appeared in 26 countries in six language editions; and as the leader of educational trips to numerous countries and cultures. Wilford has also been deeply involved in outdoor and environmental education, including being chair of the board of the NatureBridge Golden Gate campus in the Marin Headlands and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). In 1994 Wilford led the support team on Mount Everest of NOLS instructors who removed 5,000 pounds of trash off the high camps and introduced the notion of Leave No Trace to Everest mountaineering. Over the past decades, Wilford has created and led several large conferences exploring the issues addressed in this book, including two Quest for Global Healing gatherings in Bali, Indonesia in 2004 and 2007 for over 1,000 participants from forty countries, and the Beyond Sustainability conference that took place at the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii in 2010. Wilford has a BA from Yale, a law degree from Berkeley, and a PMD degree from the Harvard Business School. He lives on a houseboat in Sausalito with his wife Carole Angermeir.
