Liz Carlisle - Lentil Underground

Lentil Underground, by journalist and fellow at UC Berkeley’s Center for Diversified Farming Systems Liz Carlisle, profiles the unique grassroots movement of organic lentil farming and the farmers confronting the global food system. From the heart of Big Sky Country comes this inspiring story of a handful of colorful pioneers who have successfully bucked the chemically-based food chain and the entrenched power of agribusiness’s one percent by stubbornly banding together. Unearthing the deep roots of this movement, Lentil Underground introduces readers to a memorable cast of characters, from gun-toting libertarians and Christian homesteaders to peace-sign-waving environmental activists.

Liz Carlisle is a fellow at UC Berkeley’s Center for Diversified Farming Systems.  She holds a B.A. from Harvard University and will receive her Ph. D. from the Department of Geography at UC Berkeley in May 2014. Before graduate school, Carlisle served as Legislative Correspondent for agriculture and natural resources in the office of United States Senator Jon Tester, an organic farmer from her home state of Montana.  A former country singer who once opened shows for Travis Tritt, LeAnn Rimes and Sugarland, Carlisle brings a populist flair to her writing, which has appeared in the Smithsonian Magazine and Harvard Independent.

Annie Somerville, Executive Chef of Greens Restaurant in San Francisco, hosts a special farm-to-table dinner to celebrate the release of Lentil Underground, the new book by Michael Pollan protégé Liz Carlisle.  Join Carlisle, Somerville, and two dozen of the Montana farmers profiled in the book, for a three-course vegetarian meal featuring their specialty organic lentils and heritage grains.  Each guest will be seated next to a farmer, and the meal will take place at Greens' breathtaking Fort Mason location, with views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge.  Doors open at 5:30pm for mixing, mingling, and sunset viewing, and guests will be seated for dinner at 6:00pm.
