Elizabeth Young Roulac - The Adventure of a Lifetime (Corte Madera)

Destined to live a life of rare adventure and privilege, Elizabeth Roulac, née Elizabeth Young, was born early in the twentieth century into an American family of travelers. Yet, as she chronicles in The Adventures of a Lifetime, in the course of her remarkable lifetime, she has surpassed them all—visiting at least one hundred thirty countries around the globe.

In 1916, at the age of six weeks, a cross-country train journey from her birthplace in Los Angeles, California, to her parents’ home in Princeton, New Jersey was the first of Elizabeth’s many travels. Her father’s work as a financial advisor called him to many parts of the world, and it wasn’t long before the entire family was accompanying William Young abroad to a diverse series of places.

In the early years of Elizabeth’s life, the Youngs lived variously in Madrid; Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and Washington, DC; where she and her siblings rolled Easter eggs on the White House lawn. In the first decade of her life she traveled extensively with her family throughout Europe and the United States. From 1926 through her adolescence, Elizabeth was in Shanghai, where her father was assigned the lead financial advisor to the China government leaders, Chiang Kai Chek and T.V. Soong. Back in Shanghai from her California college one summer, Libby met fellow Californian Phil Roulac, for whom Shanghai proved to be a most auspicious port of call while working his way around the world as a freighter ship crewman.

In time Phil was to be Libby’s beloved husband and lifelong traveling companion, as her adventures continued through a long, active, and happy marriage that produced five children.

Now in her late 90s, Libby Roulac has maintained her adventurous lifestyle, traveling in recent years to Europe, the Far East, North Africa, and Central America.
