David Strathairn & Heather Goldenhersh - The Theatre of War

Co-Sponsored by Marin Shakespeare Company

The "Theatre of War: Soldiers and Citizens Tour" presents dramatic readings of Sophocles' Ajax -- an ancient Greek tragedy about the suicide of a great, respected warrior -- to diverse military and civilian audiences in order to engage communities in powerful town hall discussions about the visible and invisible wounds of war. The presentations are intended to foster understanding and compassion, while mobilizing citizens and resources to help improve the lives of service members, veterans, and their families and communities.

David Strathairn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying journalist Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck. He is recognized for his role as CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen in the 2007 film The Bourne Ultimatum, a role he reprised in 2012's The Bourne Legacy. He played a prominent role as Dr. Lee Rosen on the Syfy series Alphas from 2011 to 2012 and played Secretary of State William Henry Seward in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln.

A graduate of Juilliard, Heather Goldenhersh has appeared in films such as Swallowed, The Great Gatsby, and The Believer. Goldenhersh also appeared on television in Sex and the City and episodes of the Law & Order franchise. Goldenhersh was nominated for a Tony Award in 2005 for "Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play" for her role as Sister James in Doubt. She also won a Theatre World Award for that performance.

For years, theater director Bryan Doerries has led an innovative public health project that produces ancient tragedies for current and returned soldiers, addicts, tornado and hurricane survivors, and a wide range of other at-risk people in society. The Theater of War: What Ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today draws on these extraordinary firsthand experiences to clearly and powerfully illustrates the redemptive and therapeutic potential of this classical, timeless art.
