Bridget McGuire fell in love with God when she was thirty-five years old. Drowning in a sea of diapers and lost in her routine life as mother and wife, she felt invisible until that day in 1980 when she was on a retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Caught up in an unexpected mystical union with God, Bridget’s life was turned upside down and changed forever.
Bridget is an ordinary mystic, ready to share her story to awaken other mystics. Her journey of transformation isn’t easy. The tragedies she endures—a brutal divorce, betrayal, forbidden love, the agony of death—challenge her to continue to reach deep inside and hold on to the dignity of her own divinity. Her story is about the struggle to live the extraordinary in her ordinary life.
Bridget discovers that the mystical experience of God’s love is available to everyone. She has always felt the nearness of God in the process of transformation, and the Presence she encountered on the mountaintop continues to be as close to her as her own breath.
Forty-nine percent of the people living in the United States have had mystical experiences but were afraid to talk about them. Ordinary Mystic is one of the first novels to offer the extraordinary journey of an ordinary woman struggling to integrate her encounters with God into her daily life. Bridget’s story gives readers permission to recognize and honor the mystical experience and feel comfortable sharing their own stories.
