We’ll use many different catalysts for in-class writing and discussion in order to bring nascent insight to light as we initiate / generate new poems, and as we extend the vitality and vision in the poems that you’ll bring for revision. The inspiration in our first-drafts frequently comes down to the page veiled in our familiar patterns of thinking (the syntax, the use of aesthetic elements), and so it often takes the active intervention that’s possible in revision to entice the newest energies, latent in the language, to show themselves. We’ll be working both in revision and in new poem generation, since both offer different opportunities to practice attuning to revelatory surprises, to testing the borders of the comfort zone. We will have ample time through the day for you to write privately as you try each new catalyst, and we will share throughout the day in a comfortable environment in which we appreciate the challenge we each undertake, and we respect the fact that sometimes the roughest beginnings are doorways to the most significant revolutions in practice. Our intention will be to further each writer’s unique trajectory and to revel in what arrives--the revelatory that comes from each poet's unique relationship to language. This class is appropriate for new poets and for poets who are very proficient in their craft. Pre-class assignment instructions upon registration.
