Class: Pat Holt - Summer Book Group

Tuesday, August 8, 2017 - 10:30am

Tuesday August 8, 2017  • 10:30 am – 12:30 pm • $30

Every few years Pat’s group schedules a special Summer session that’s open to everyone, and this year is special, indeed.  A while back, the group discovered Anthony Marra’s  A Constellation of Vital Phenomena  ("a novel about Chechnya that nobody wanted to read,” says Pat, "until we did read it and then so unforgettable we loved it, loved it, loved it.”) The same magical reading experience is promised in  Marra’s next book, The Tsar of Love and Technonow in paperback.

Don’t be put off by the description "interlocking stories” — this usually means a magnificent novel with many surprises. As the Boston Globe says, Marra’s chapters are “cunningly set out like mosaic tiles that keep self-rearranging until they cohere into a complex, cathartic whole.” Very chewy, full of ideas, great characters, and Marra’s wonderful “arsenal of wit”!

Note: Sign up early as this group has a maximum of 15.  (A runover group may be listed for that Friday, August 11. If you prefer that date, let us know!)

Pat Holt leads a discussion of books that have captured the contemporary imagination. Holt is the former book review editor of the S.F. Chronicle and publisher of Holt Uncensored.
