Class: Kerrin Meis - The Symbolist Generation

11/07/2012 5:00 pm

Five Wednesdays: Nov. 7 - Dec. 12 (no class Nov. 21)

Seeking to suggest, not describe, the Symbolist artist investigated the world of mystery and dreams. Stephan Mallarme stated “ to name an object is to suppress 75% of the enjoyment of the poem.” Symbolism began as a literary movement : Baudelaire, Mallarme, Proust and Huysmans. Working from fantasy and imagination, largely ignoring nature, painters were inspired by music ,and sought to place their work in the ambiguous world of the indeterminate. We examine Moreau, Redon, Rousseau, Denis, Klimt, Munch, and many others.
