This class looks at eighty major figure paintings by artists like Renoir, Monet, Morisot and Manet in concert with fashion photographs, period costumes, accessories and popular prints. This highlights the relationship between painting and fashion from the 1860s to the 1880s when Paris emerged as the fashion capital of the world. At the same time, writers like Mallarme, Baudelaire and Zola turned an eye to la Mode as a harbinger of la Modernite. The Impressionists seemed to capture the spirit of their time.
