Deciphering Degas : Looking at His Art to Separate Fact from Myth

Best known for his depictions of dancers, Edgar Degas is generally classified as an Impressionist although he derided "plein air " painting. Labeled a misogynist by his critics, an anti-Semite by most, a loner by his own admission, he created oddly perceptive portraits, had a penchant for the laboring classes: laundresses, milliners and prostitutes, an attitude toward composition entirely new to Western art, and a pre-occupation with blindness. What can we learn from his works both before and after his extended visit to his Creole family in New Orleans.

Kerrin Meis taught art history at SFSU for ten years, and she currently teaches for the OLLI programs at Dominican University and UC Berkeley. She leads study tours in Europe. Her Book Passage classes have been big favorites for years.
