Cammie McGovern & Julie Murphy: Young Adult Author Event co-sponsored by Beyond Differences

Wed. October 7, 2015 ŸŸŸ• 6:00pm • Admission is free

Co-sponsored by Beyond Differences, a Marin-based non-profit aimed at ending social isolation among teens and empowering them to lead the movement to create an inclusive middle school culture, Book Passage is proud to host YA talents Cammie McGovern, author of A Step Toward Falling, and Julie Murphy, author of Dumplin', on their multi-city national tour with HarperCollins Children's Books!

Cammie McGovern writes about situations and characters that are not often seen in teen fiction. In A Step Toward Falling, she has created a story that features authentic experiences with amazing and memorable voices. Cammie brings heart, humor and empathy to subjects that are sometimes difficult, but important, to talk about. In A Step Toward Falling, we are introduced to Emily and Belinda. In Belinda, a character with developmental disabilities, Cammie has crafted a well-rounded character unlike many others in teen fiction, a voice that rings true in such a genuine way that it shines through the page to capture the imagination and hearts of readers.

In Dumplin’, Julie Murphy takes her writing to a whole new level of complexity and depth. Essentially the book is about body image and fat shaming—but it takes an unexpected turn. Will is a fearless, funny, and aspirational heroine. She is a self-proclaimed fat girl who has always been at home in her own skin. It is only when Will’s feelings for the local heartthrob are surprisingly reciprocated that her confidence is shaken and shadowed with doubt. In a market where the definition of beauty is terribly narrow, and YA protagonists are at times interchangeable, Dumplin’ introduces an important voice to the teen audience, breaking the mold on every level.
