Saturday, February 18, 2017 - 1:00pm

The Bay Area Travel Writers organization invites all to attend the awards ceremony for the 2017 BATW Best Travel Writing & Photography competition, which was judged by top travel editors and experts in such categories such as travel books, articles, websites, broadcasting, photography and more. BATW winners will receive prizes and personal comments from the judges; winning photography will be presented, and refreshments will be served.

The winning authors are:

Laurie McAndish King
Lost, Kidnapped, Eaten Alive!
King’s adventures may have seemed like a good idea at the time: Tracking lions on foot, without a gun, in Botswana. Taste-testing the world’s most expensive coffee—which happens to be made from the excrement of a small Balinese mammal. Marrying a Maasai warrior in Kenya, searching the Irish countryside for an erotic goddess, and attempting to eat a horse in southern Italy. Whether she is lost in Melbourne, kidnapped in Tunisia, or eaten alive in Queensland, King’s travel adventures tend toward the quirky. And her retelling is poignant, thoughtful, occasionally unsettling, often funny, and always appealing.

Andrea Granahan
It’s Greek to Me
The story of a young American family's pivotal years living first in the mountain villages of the Peloponnesus, and then on the island of Paros in the Cyclades, long before there was an EU. The Greeks embraced the family and the family embraced the Greeks' simple way of life, with hilarious and harrowing moments along the way. Not wealthy, Greece was rich, not just in history, but in daily enjoyment of life.
