Admiral James Stavridis - Sea Power (Corte Madera)

From the time of the Greeks and the Persians, clashing in the Mediterranean, sea power has determined world power.  To an extent that is often underappreciated, it still does. No one understands this more than Admiral James Stavridis, one of the most decorated naval officers of our time. A retired 4-star admiral with 35 years of active service in the Navy, he served as the Supreme Allied Commander for Global Operations at NATO from 2009 to 2013. In Sea Power: The History and Geopolitics of the World’s Oceans, Stavridis takes us with him on a remarkable voyage of the world’s most important bodies of water. He shows us how the geography of the oceans has shaped the destiny of nations, and how naval power has helped create the world we live in today, and will shape the world we live in tomorrow.

This book is a marvelous naval history, giving us fresh insight into great naval engagements from the battles of Salamis and Lepanto through to Trafalgar, the Battle of the Atlantic, and Cold War submarine blind man’s bluff. It is also a keen-eyed reckoning with the likely sites of our next major naval conflicts, particularly the Arctic Ocean and the South China Sea. Finally, Admiral Stavridis steps back to take a holistic view of the plagues to our oceans that are best seen that way, from piracy to pollution.

Admiral Jim Stavridis, USN (Ret.) is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who spent over 35 years on active service in the Navy. He commanded destroyers and a carrier strike group in combat and served for seven years as a four-star admiral, including nearly four years as the first Navy officer chosen as Supreme Allied Commander for Global Operations at NATO. After retiring from the Navy he was named the dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 2013. He has written articles on global security issues for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic.
