SUMMARY:Mary Johnson - An Unquenchable Thirst\: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:
At seventeen\, Mary Johnson experienced her calling when she saw a photo of Mother Teresa on the cover of Time magazine\; eighteen months later she began her training as a Missionary of Charity\, a nun in Mother Teresa’s order. Not without difficulty\, this boisterous\, independent-minded teenager eventually adapted to the sisters’ austere life of poverty and devotion\, but beneath the white-and-blue sari beat the heart of an ordinary young woman who faced daily the simple and profound struggles we all share\, the same desires for love and connection. Eventually\, after twenty years of service\, Johnson left the church to find her own path. In <a href=\\"http\://www.bookpassage.com/book/9780385527484\\">An Unquenchable Thirst\: A Memoir ($16.00)\, her magnificently told story holds universal truths about the mysteries of faith and how a woman discovers herself.

For twenty years\, as Sister Donata\, Mary Johnson was a Missionary of Charity\, a nun in Mother Teresa’s order\, until she left in 1997. A respected teacher and public speaker\, she has been named a Fellow of the MacDowell Colony and is on the board of A Room of Her Own Foundation. She lives in New Hampshire.

SUMMARY:Georgia Kelly - Uncivil Liberties
DESCRIPTION:
<font size=\\"2\\"><font color=\\"#ff6600\\">Uncivil Liberties was penned by six members of Praxis Peace Institute's book club (Sonoma) who decided to challenge and deconstruct libertarian and right wing ideologies. Taking on the tenets of libertarian thought\, they challenge the American myths that promote a &quot\;me first&quot\; agenda\, rugged individualism\, and the lone hero. They explore the role that ideologies play in helping us make sense of the world and revisit the American experiment -- still unproved -- of American democracy. Citing successful alternatives to laissez-faire and corporate capitalism\, the authors promote existing models that celebrate the dignity of humankind by promoting empathy\, cooperation\, and respect.

<font size=\\"2\\">

<font size=\\"2\\">The authors are Ben Boyce (community activist)\, Benjamin Colby\, PhD (anthropology)\, Gus diZerega\, PhD (political science)\, Julianne Maurseth\, PhD (organizational psychology)\, Barry Spector (author of Madness at the Gates of the City\: The Myth of American Innocence)\, and editor/author Georgia Kelly\, Director of Praxis Peace Institute.
