Baristas for Book Passage Café and Wine Bar

Located inside Marin County's beloved Book Passage Bookstore in Corte Madera, Book Passage Café and Wine Bar is the perfect place to relax with a book and a pastry, catch up with a friend over a cup of locally roasted coffee, or grab a meal before an author event. In addition to daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner service, we frequently host luncheons, mixers, and various other unique events.

Book Passage Café and Wine Bar is seeking applicants for barista positions. Applicants must be able to work day shifts, weekends, and some nights. Pay scale starts at $10 per hour plus shared house tips (open to negotiated rate depending on experience). Passion for literature and farm-to-table cuisine a plus! Book Passage Café and Wine Bar offers opportunities for creativity and growth, making it a great place for up-and-coming hospitality interns to start building a resume. We are searching for an organized, detail-oriented team player with experience in both back and front of house roles. Retail Manager

Book Passage is searching for an experienced, dynamic Retail Manager to join our Corte Madera team!

With over 800 author events per year, two internationally acclaimed annual conferences, an exciting array of writing and language classes, and of course, a comprehensive selection of books on a wide variety of topics, Book Passage is one of the world’s leading bookstores and a Bay Area institution. We are committed to our community, working with a number of local schools, universities, and non-profit organizations, and striving to inspire creativity and learning for Bay Area residents of all ages. To that end, Book Passage offers employees endless opportunities to develop new interests and skills, personally and professionally.

With our lively calendar of author events, writing and language classes, book clubs, and more, no two days at Book Passage are alike. In addition to embracing daily excitement and challenges, general responsibilities will include:

• Creating the retail staffing schedule  
• Hiring and training new booksellers
• Building and managing enticing book displays
• Active bookselling
• Modeling best practices that reflect Book Passage’s commitment to customer service
• Leading Shift Managers and providing them with clear expectations
• Acting as Shift Manager as needed
• Maintaining clear communication between front room and back room staff
• Organizing and implementing various daily and long-range projects

We are looking for independently motivated applicants with both leadership and bookselling experience. Qualified candidates will demonstrate:

About the Café Manager

From avid readers to renowned authors, Book Passage Café and Wine Bar serves many of the Bay Area’s most creative minds. We are looking for a Café Manager who will draw upon this creative energy to infuse the café with inspiration and originality. This position offers freedom to implement fresh ideas—our ideal candidate will welcome feedback from customers and staff alike to determine what’s working and make improvements where they are needed. An upbeat, helpful, and collaborative attitude is a must. If you’re an innovative, organized, and flexible thinker with a passion for food and books, we’d love to hear from you!

Description of Duties

• Maintain and improve upon existing operational and administrative procedures to maximize efficiency
• Develop menus
• Manage inventory and operational costs to meet projected monthly and yearly budgets
• Train new employees and ensure continued success of all staff
• Assign weekly staff schedules
• Establish and sustain positive, lasting relationships with both patrons and vendors
• Ensure that California Retail Food Code health and safety regulations are consistently met
• Troubleshoot and maintain open dialogue with Book Passage's owners and retail staff
• Daily responsibilities will include food preparation, inventory management, overseeing staff training and scheduling, and maintaining a clean and inviting café environment.

Qualifications

• Experience in the hospitality and food service industry
• Detail-oriented and organized
• Leadership experience--you know how to bring out the best in every member of your team
• Excellent people skills--must provide exceptional customer service and maintain relationships with local vendors
• Understanding of operational and administrative systems
• Basic understanding of accounting principles to support inventory and cost management duties
• Ability to take charge and think clearly in a fast-paced environment
• Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Experience with POS systems
