In this workshop, students will study the components of personal essay through lecture and writing exercises and will learn how to structure and craft creative nonfiction in a way that is both joyful and rewarding. Victoria Zackheim wrote The Bone Weaver and has edited five anthologies. She wrote the documentary "Where Birds Never Sang", now airing on PBS.

This workshop focuses on re-interpreting stories you've always been told about who you are and where you came from. We'll add layers of context and reflection to turn those stories into literature. Bring a notebook or laptop, and be ready to rewrite history.

Writing a one-page memoir jump-starts the writing process and explores the shape that the memoir is taking. The class looks at memoirs focusing on one key character, event, or relationship; memoirs of lists; and memoirs summarizing a life. Then we'll write short exercises and learn self-editing tips.

This five-week workshop will help you transform your personal life stories into the stuff of rich memoirs. Jasmin Darznik is the award-winning author of The Good Daughter: A Memoir of My Mother's Hidden Life. She offers inspiration and practical tips, including ways to get started, interviewing family members, and handling the emotional and ethical challenges of writing memoir. You will also learn how and where to market your work. Darznik received her Ph.D. from Princeton and has taught widely.

Class: Adrian Tiller - Writing About Family

Our family provided our first relationships, as well as our first conflicts. There is no richer source of raw material, whether we write fiction, memoir, or poetry. We will use family stories to improve our skills with the various elements of fiction (character, plot, dialogue, description and conflict). Adrian Tiller is a writer, teacher, and licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. He has created numerous workshops and taught graduate students at Dominican University.
